After reading your post, As I do not believe in hype, I checked some numbers.

On Japanesepod on the 9th you had 2123 followers up 70 from 2 days before. So at the height of your great marketing campaign, you got 35 new followers per day. At this rate to get a million followers you would need continue like this for more than 78 yeas!

On the Chinese site you had 181 followers up 15 from 4 days before. To get a million it would take 685 years.

On Englishclass in 7 days you increased users by 3 reaching 37, this is less than a user a day. So we are talking about 6340 years.

Even assuming the best case (which seems 50 new fans per day on Facebook) for all 30 “chances”, it would take many years to achieve the goal.

Sweepstakes? No skill required for winning? Asking people to sign up their mum? I think you should have left this stuff to reader’s digest… It does not fir the image of a serious company!

Sorry for sounding a dissonant chord, but twitter embodies the opposite of learning, according to well respected sources. Why associate yourself with it? Learning is not about the latest fad (what next? One word blogs? Every post a letter of the alphabet?). How about adding content to the site. Who would pay 120 dollars to learn a couple of words out of context from a video?

Giovanni, the goal of 1 Million is unrealistic but that#s probably the reason they picked that number ;)

Of course it was an unrealistic target. The goal is always to increase customers. Especially now with all the new sites (my guess is, though it is early days, based on the number of comments, often zero, and very low following, is that they are not doing nearly as well as Japanesepod). The common view is that there is nothing to lose with an internet sweepstake (or lottery in the UK). My point would be that this low-level strategy can backfire. It seems to me that the “wide and shallow” metaphor applies here.

Surely not achieving the stated target by a very large margin, will look like a failure, even if more money is made. A lot of fudging will have to happen to present this as a success.

What about back to basics? These day if you connect to Japanesepod you find pages of lotteries, popup, notionistic content, and tons of self-congratulatory talk. The rule seems to be more noise, less original updated rich content.

I am not disagreeing. Quality should speak for itself. I don’t like such an advertising campaigns.

If you look at our Twitter page, you’ll see that we update it daily with new content  Before it was wasei-eigo phrases and bikkuri adverbs, and now it’s our Everyday Kanji project.

This promotion is strong evidence that Peter’s last name must be the result of some terrible mixup at the hospital where he was born. He is clearly a Barnum.

So, I’m curious. I have been a subscriber to all of these pages excluding Facebook for a long time (and I’m a fan of that page now too).

How would we receive any of the prizes via these mediums? Because it’s not as if my Facebook, Twitter and Youtube accounts are linked to my JP101.com account!

Without having to check all the time you can query the API of TwitterCounter, by
pasting the following URL in the address bar:

http://twittercounter.com/api/?username=japanesepod101&output=xml&results=100

You can query englishclass101, and so on by changing the username.

You get a record of daily followers…

1097
1103
1120
1290
1358
1402
1437
1462
1500
1512
1623
1711
1741
1761

That you can easily process (though I have to use ASCII here for this post not really pretty!)

If you check what you find is that the campaign had no effect so far on any other language sites (Chinese, Italian, English,…), but it did boost slightly Japanesepod!

The growths are negligible in the twitter world but it is still interesting for Marketing in people…

With the first announcement, 26/07/09, you got 170 extra followers in a day.
The following days the number of additional users declined every day (68 44 35 25 38 12)

Then after the second announcement, 2/08/09, you peaked again with extra 111, followed by a declining trend
( 88 30 20).

It seems that the announcement are having smaller effects as time goes by….
