Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! Just take a moment to think about all the things you say that include “able to.” Just a few examples are, “I’ll be able to meet you,” and “Will you be able to make it to the meeting?” You’ll find that these simple words quickly become an integral part of your Japanese.

This beginner Japanese lesson is here to help you master the simple way to talk about ability. By conjugating the Japanese verb koto ga dekimasu, you’ll end up with “able to swim,” “able to eat,” “able to talk,” and anything else you can think of. And, don’t miss the easy-to-read charts in this lesson!

みなさん、こんにちは!
Can you tell us some things that you are able to do?

えと、えいごとにほんごとドイツをはなすことができる。

Atolm_Dragon says:

Does the Japanese on this pic say ‘I thin magic is fun too’?

avatar
Tommy says:

To Atolm_Dragon-san: Perhaps the meaning is closer to “I think we should also be able to enjoy/experience/see magic.”

I enjoyed the lesson. I hope the magician can conjure up someone for Mitsuru-san who is as kind and considerate to him as he is to Erika-san.

As for using the Lesson Notes while listening to the dialogue, I usually always have the notes ready, but will listen first to the normal and slower conversations and then look at the notes in detail. Often, however, I will look at them when I hear something I really can’t follow — maybe that holds true for 20-30% of the lessons.

I hope this helps to answer your questions at the beginning.

hi… Good morning!
I have just registered for the Free Content at this time since I am presently unemployed. My wife and I are seriously considering going to Japan in the future to work and we want to learn Japanese.

Can you give some hints for a brand new beginner!!!! Thank you for your help!
(i.e., is it possible to go to the first lesson for the beginner and learn this way. How can I see the script as I am listening to the audio?

Thanks for your help!

jim

Thanks Toimmy-san! Sounded a bit weird and I’m no good at interpreting. :)

Also jim: Use iknow!com/smartfm. That’s been invaluable to me as a beginner. http://smart.fm/home

ただいま!
Tadaima! After many, many months, I have returned. In the meantime, I went to Europe and actually got together with some folks I met right here on JPOD! These were JPOD friends in London, Norway, Sweden and France! What a trip!!

As to your question about reading the lesson while listening: If I’m using my iPod, I just listen. If I’m listening to the lesson online, I like to watch the text.

By the way, in the romaji translation, one whole sentence was omitted in the first speech. (Haha, I’m back and complaining already! :dogeza: )

Line-by-line audio in the Learning Center is one of the best things about the Premium Membership. However, could someone give me a tip about the “new” voice recorder? I don’t know how to use this one. I could the use the “old” one and it was very helpful for me to hear my American accent and try to improve it a bit.

日本ごをすこしよめます。 :dogeza:

Thanks for the shorter way to say this!

P.S.: Let me say - - you’ll NEVER be old!

I was just wondering the difference between “食べられる” and “食べれる”. Grammatically speaking, which one is correct?

毎日、バスを乗る時にiPodでJapanesePod101のレッスンが聞けます。
でもオフィスでiPodを聞くことができません。
しかも、JapanesePod101のおかけで、ジョギングしてる時にも日本語勉強できますよ。
..正しい文ですか?

「飲み放題」と「食べ放題」はBuffetという意味ですか?

コンメントは長過ぎですか?
I want to improve my Japanese by making Japanese sentences everyday. This site is so helpful to me.

お願いします。

ルーさん>すばらしいですね!

Tommyさん> I know, don’t you just feel bad for Mitsuru-san? And thanks for your feedback!

jim scoginさん> Welcome! With a free membership you have access to lessons of the past three weeks, but for true beginners we recommend Newbie Series Season 2 (Nihongo Dojo) which is under the Basic Content.

Atolm_Dragonさん> I’ve never used iKnow but I hear a lot of good things about it!

Liz21さん>おかえりなさい!Sounds like a great trip! That’s neat that you got to meet up with some Jpod friends  As for the Voice Recorder, do you have Java installed? Can you see the three buttons for record, stop, and play? I wasn’t familiar with the old one so let me know if you still need help and I’ll try asking someone.

MaiXuanさん>コメントをありがとうございます!

highbridgeさん> Good question! Grammatically speaking, 食べられる is correct, but 食べれる is used just as much and has now become acceptable (this goes for all potential verbs without ら). The meaning is exactly the same!

メーさん>昨日でゴールデンウィーク終わりました! Your sentences look fine to me but I’ll wait for one of our native senseis to pass final judgement  「飲み放題」 is all you can drink, and 「食べ放題」 is all you can eat. So it’s like a buffet in that you can eat all you want, but it is not necessarily a buffet. There are restaurants that offer 食べ放題 but you just order what you want off of the menu.

Ripさん> Thanks for your feedback! ^^

Jessi-san,
Thanks very much for your concern about the fact that I can’t operate the Voice Recorder in the Learning Center! Yes, I have Java installed.

I’m still waiting for some help! I can’t wait to hear again how bad my American English accent is so I can try to correct it.

If anyone reads this and can help me, I would appreciate it.

JPP168さん> Glad to hear it!

I think “tsukurimasu” (to make) would be better in this case!

Yes, I thought “tsukurimasu” might have been the better choice as well but I wanted to see if “dekimasu” could also be used in that way. Thanks again!

Naomi-sensei,

I thought the information that “ga” is used as direct object for potential was very helpful. Other cases where “ga” can be used as an object marker might also be a good lesson.

Thanks,

Miles says:

Hi,

Sorry this is a very general post and isn’t specific to this week’s lesson.

Just wanted to say that I think JapanesePod101 is GREAT and I think in many ways represents a sort of holy grail of Japanese learning.

Before discovering this site I was using the textbooks (which are still useful of course if a bit boring to plough through) and other audio sources like Pimsleur. Without wishing to knock Pimsleur and its ilk too much I think those kinds of learning devices are staggeringly limited compared to this site. They claim to take you from absolute beginner to intermediate high level. Hmmmmmm more like absolute beginner to relative beginner able to converse in a few limited situations as long as the dialogue never differs from the lesson, i.e useless in real life. Japanese Pod 101 on the other hand……. teaches you to speak and understand Japanese. Isn’t it amazing?!

Keep up the great work!

Tiffany says:

I just wanted to say that I adore this site - I get so much out of the lessons, and the extra material in the Learning Center is wonderful.

Re: reading the lesson notes while listening, though, I actually don’t tend to do that, and here’s why: Listening comprehension is my weakest point, and if I read while listening, then I’m not working on my listening comp–I’m working on my reading comprehension. I find it’s much more helpful if I listen to it first, doing my best with only listening, and then after that, listen to it again while reading the lesson notes. This way I get the benefit of practicing my listen comprehension, but then afterwards, I can see exactly what words were used in the dialogue and thus pick up some new vocab and expressions that way. For me, that’s the most effective way to make use of the lessons.

Anyway, thank you again for all the effort that’s put into this site! It’s one of the best Japanese learning tools I’ve encountered, and I can see from the comments that it’s making a big difference for a lot of people. Keep up the great work! :kokoro:

i agree with Tiffany san, in that these lessons could be used as great listening material. I do that too. Looking at the PDF in the beginning kinda spoils it for me.. So I listen till the English translation n then see the PDF.
