Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! We use adjectives all the time to describe people, places and things. Just think about how boring life would be if we couldn’t make our language colorful with adjectives. You could only say, “These are flowers,” instead of, “These beautiful red roses smell like fragrant perfume.” As you can see, adjectives make language more interesting.

In this newbie Japanese lesson, make your Japanese more colorful by combining two or more adjectives. You’ll learn to use the te-form of i-adjectives in order to combine Japanese adjectives the right way. This Japanese lesson also includes a chart of commonly used adjectives that you can start using now!

Mina-san, who can you describe by combining i-adjectives?

Angry Katie says:

Can I say “彼氏は日本人で頭がよくて面白い人です。” ?

Other examples:
マイケルジャクソンは可笑しくて有名な歌手です。
キムタクは細くてかっこいいモデルです。

こんにちは!

How can I describe anything by saying what it is not? I mean: to say two negatives adjectives, like “This book is not old, neither heavy” (what a silly example…). I’ll be something like 「この本はふるくておもくないです。」?

ありがとう!
Daniel

Hmm, so if I say I was hanging out with a guy friends and I said ”男のともだち” would that be the same as when guys in english say “Yea dude I was hanging out with my boys” or would it sound gay like “I was hanging out with my boyfriends” (The same way women say “I was hanging out with my girlfriends”)?

コロラドのデンバーは山の近くて美しい町です~。

Daniel - I would think the sentence would be この本は古くなくて重くない。 (このほんはふるくなくておもくない。) But I might be wrong!

Chrisさん>Sorry about that, we should have it up soon!

AngryKatieさん> All of your sentences look great! Nice job!

Danielさん>That’s a great question, and as it turns out, the answer is a little complicated. The best way to say your sentence would be 「この本はふるくないし、おもくないです」 using し (used to list adjectives), or 「この本はふるくもおもくもない」, which is closest to the meaning “this book is neither old nor heavy”. However, these examples both use grammar that is a bit above the Newbie level.

You can’t have [adjective + なくて + negative adjective], but you can have [adjective + なくて + affirmative adjective], as in この本はむずかしくなくておもしろいです (This book is not difficult and it’s interesting). Funny how that works :???:
I hope this didn’t end up confusing you more!!

jhaltonさん>I think in that case, just 友達 by itself would be enough  If you were a guy and used 友達, the listener would probably assume you were talking about guys anyways!

デボンさん>デンバーは今、さむいですか??

プチクレアさん>私も、暖かい春が大好きです :kokoro:

Neyさん>な adjectives can be connected with で! For more information, see the lesson that came before this one, #37! It’s all covered there

Eric-san and Naomi-sensei,

I do not use the PDF while listening, because I always listen to the lessons in the car. I do agree it could help. However, the advantage to audio-only learning is that you tend to concentrate more on remembering sounds, which is actually harder for someone like me. This really helps with audio comprehension especially when the conversational speed begins to increase.

Many other language courses only use pictures and audio at the newbie level and introduce written language later, simulating how a child learns.

Thanks for the hard work and keep those great audio lessons coming! I like all of the new hosts!

is it possible to put na after a i-adjective. For instance, 大きな円。。。i read this in a core 2000 lesson.

avatar
Naomi says:

jack-san
It’s not possible to put な after i-adjective.
大きな and 小さな are the only exceptions.

avatar
Jessi says:

jackさん,
大きい is actually a special case - there are two forms, 大きい and 大きな, which are basically interchangeable. (Same goes for 小さい and 小さな). But normally, no, you cannot use “na” after i-adjectives.

I know this comment is a bit late, but I always read the lesson notes while listening to the lesson. It helps be remember the words better, and also helps with the pronunciation.

I also read the kanji PDF and the vocab part of the lesson notes first, so I can try to read through the dialog once by myself before I listen to the lesson.

Mayumi says:

Elis-san,
Thank you for sharing the way how you are studying with our lessons. That would be very useful information for other listeners!

mina-san kon’nichiwa,
Before looking at the lesson notes I listen to the conversation part, but not the translation part and see how much I can understand just by listening. Then I listen again while reading it in hiragana. Then I listen the whole conversation reading it in romaji. The rest of the pod I read the lesson notes while listening and making notes.
