We hope you enjoyed Jun’s introduction to Hie Jinja. Have you ever been to a Japanese shrine during New Year’s? Or any other time? Tell us about your experiences.

Nice video , I’m gonna take the escalator if I got there.

A)To face the nearest shrine? (Or God i.e the boss :P ).

So Peter can oversee his all workers from the back of the room, thus assuring his high standards and expectations for Jp101. ( Or just check they aren’t on Facebook/Mixi )

No, I remember you mentioned in a prior show the desks faced the Shrine.

あけましておめでとうございます! Really looking forward to the new seasons with you guys! Best of wishes!

Great video! Very instructive and well edited! Thank you JP101!
I hope to see more like this, like how to behave in a restaurant or in public places etc.
I’ve seen an entrance to a shrine near Shibuya station but didn’t take time to get in as it was raining too much.
As for the desks… are they facing Ise-jinja? or something… just a guess.

Yes, I enjoyed the video very much. And yes, I have been to a Japanese shrine during the New Years celebration. 実話、exactly one year ago today, my girl friend and I went to Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto. They did not have an escalator so we got lots of exercise climbing up and down the hillside but what a wonderful view of Kyoto from the top. 所で、during our visit to the shrine I asked her to marry me and Kiyomi and I were married last week here in America.

I look forward to going back and spending many more New Years at different shrines around Japan.

みんさん、あけましておめでとございます!!!

The video was great !!! Just great !!! I really hope there will be more of these. There have been several lessons in Jpod about お参り方 but this is by far the best.

And it’s always nice to put a face on a name

I guess all desks face the shrine… And 日枝神社 is a lovely place indeed ! :kokoro:

Great video - I really liked the idea of showing some interesting vocab in the corner. Maybe it would be nice to have a version without the subtitles - it’s really tempting to read them, while it would be a nice exercise to watch the subtitled video after trying the “raw” one. Anyways, thanks for an interesting show!

Thomas says:

Great video, thanks a lot again :)

When did you make this video? I visited a lot Shrines during the first days of the new year, and all of them were crowded.

I know, that there is a Shrine in Front of the JPod-Desks, so that´s may be the reason, isn´t it? I assume this may be the Hie-Shrine.

Ricardo says:

Nice video! I’ve always been curious how to behave yourself into a temple… so that’s how it is done. Thanks!

Hmm, maybe the reason is that it’s towards mecca? Nah, actually I have no idea!

spidey says:

Everyone’s desk at J-Pod faces the same way because Peter believes in feng shui.

J-Pod で皆さんの机は同じ向きにしています。なぜならペタさんは风水にしんじます。

Is my Japanese correct?

spidey says:

By the the way, do left-handed people wash their hands in reverse order?

ところで、左ききの人の手洗いかたは反対ですか?

Is this Japanese correct?

Foniks says:

Is it just me or is the lesson notes pdf not working? The other two are fine, but I cannot see any Kanji in the lesson notes!

Great vid though!

I have been to Meiji Jingu once but it was this past summer and not during New Year’s.

Happy New Year Mina-san! :dogeza:

Will be back with a more detailed response, but wanted to give the answer to the question, which some people already got! Great job!

The answer is to so that the desks face the shrine, Hie Shrine in the case of our office.

Although, FortFukushima is kinda right too.

Thanks for all the comments! Kotoshi mo yoroshiku onegai shimasu!

よろしく!

Hey guys!

明けましておめでとうございます!
Thanks for all the kind comments!
Handsome *Italian* guy? That’s pretty good of you to guess his nationality just from a quick glimpse!

Vahid: Did you try purifying yourself when you went to Meiji Jingu? Next time you’ll know how!
If you’re ever at Meiji Jingu again, keep an eye out for wedding couples. My Japanese friends got married there just because they wanted to feel like rock stars with a bunch of foreigners taking their pictures.

Ricardo: Glad you learned. Actually the part about lifting the ladle at the end isn’t so well known, even among Japanese. I’ve surprised a few of my Japanese friends with that little tid-bit.

Spidey: Haha - I don’t think Feng Shui says anything about which way desks should face…
But I did learn an interesting Feng Shui related fact yesterday. Apparently Tokukawa Ieyasu (famous Japanese shogun) was buried in Nikko to the North-West of Tokyo because of a thought system similar to Feng Shui that says evil comes in from the North-West. He asked to be buried there so he could protect Edo (Tokyo) even after death.
And sorry…don’t know about lefties. Usually left-handedness is looked down upon in traditional Eastern culture.

Foniks: Are you still unable to get things working?

Thomas: Good assumption!
It was shot around late September, I think. It’s been a while, so I’ve kinda forgotten.
You’re right - during New Year’s, the shrines/temples are much more crowded, and it’d be almost impossible to shoot a video like this.

Wojtek: Thanks for the input. Glad you liked the graphics - Matt does a great job with them!
We’ll keep in mind what you said about doing it without subs. Jun’s speech is pretty fast, and he uses some of difficult words, so we thought it would be best to have them in this time. Are you subscribed to the video premium feed? If you look back at the old iLove videos - they have options for both, with subs and without. Some even have JP subs! We’re still working out the best method. Please continue commenting and giving us input - we’re listening!

Barto: 素晴らしいって言ってくれてありがとうございます!

Jan: Glad having it on YouTube helped. A lot of quality gets lost on YouTube, but you’re right - it’s the most far-reaching and convenient service for now. Hopefully quality and convenience will catch up soon!

こはい:Congratulations on your wedding!

他のみんなさん:Thanks for your comments! Stick with us for more exciting videos coming soon! I’m personally really looking forward to the Kanji Corner series to take off.

今年も宜しくお願いします!

I personally think all the desks face the same direction so that Peter can make sure nobody’s on YouTube when they’re supposed to be working.
