Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com. One of the first things people ask is, “Where do you work?” If you love your job, do you know how to express that you work at the right place for you? What about if you don’t? Can you talk about finding the right job? I don’t have to tell you how important it is to be able to talk about your job in Japanese. If you’ve had a conversation, you know it!

That’s why this Yojijukugo lesson is right for you. Learn all about — wa tekizai tekisho da to talk about a person’s being right for a certain job. As a bonus, learn to use kare wa bajitōfū datta to discuss a person who does not listen to advice in Japanese. And, as always, expand your Japanese with vocabulary words and sample sentences.

Mina-san, are you happy with where you currently work or go to school?

I said my friend didn’t know 馬耳東風 before, right? I told her it was pretty much the same as 右の耳から左の耳に抜ける. Was that correct?

Since then, though, I’ve seen 馬耳東風 in a news article; it’s funny the way they jump out at you as a unit, rather than one character at a time. Anki is great

仁居流 says:

How did the kanji zai 材come to mean both wood and talent?

avatar
Hiroko says:

ジャービジ san> Fantastic! That’s exactly what I love about language learning :kokoro: and you are right about the meaning

仁居流san> because 材 (wood) has a potential for being useful in people’s lives (for building houses, making fire etc), so that came to mean as talent, which is useful to have

Yojijukugo o oshieru no wa Peter-sensei to Sakura-sensei wa tekizaitekisho da!

ha I agree with Allen
全部のJP101スタフは適材適所鵜です!

And for the sake of an example (not personal)

ほかのJP101スタフはピータさんのおやじガックを馬耳東風ことを習った。

Can we say that “we’ve learned to ignore naniNani” or is that taking the phrase out of the context and a bit strange?

For instance, could you use this phrase to say “You cant let it bug you, you need to learn how to ignore it.”?

プチクレア says:

日本語を教えるのはJpod101がやっぱり適材適所だ!

(この例は簡単だよ!!!)

馬耳東風という表現の意味は漢字を見て分かるのは本当に難しいと思うよ。四字熟語の中には面白い表現があるよ!

Hiroko says:

Eric san> これからも楽しみにしていてください :dogeza:

Allen san>Totally agree!

FortFukushima san> staff は、 「スタッフ」ですね。 おやじ「ギャグ(gyagu)」です。
to learn to do something is either 「~できるようになる」or 「~することを学ぶ」
so in this case,
「ほかのJP101スタッフはピーターさんのおやじギャグに馬耳東風でいることを学んだ。」
“You cant let it bug you, you need to learn how to ignore it.”? は
「そんなの気にしないで、無視(むし)できるようにならなくてはいけないよ。」ですね。

プチクレアさん>そうですね。もともとの意味を勉強すると、もっと分かりやすくなりますね。 When we learn the original root for each yojijukugo, or kanji for that matter, it makes it easier to remember the kanjis

適材適所 - “Horses for Courses” in English??

I love 馬耳東風 - I guess they didn’t have elephants in China.

avatar
Hiroko says:

neil.m4 san> If there had been no horse in China, and 猿 instead, it could have been 猿耳東風

Jennifer says:

本当にこの四字熟語使えるですね!

これいえますか:

または

将来に彼女はその仕事に適材適所になるらしいです。

教えてください
