亀井さん、ありがとうございます！
Kuinshii-san, In Japanese we say England as イングランド, and pound as ポンド, as Kamei-san mentioned.
You can also say イギリス as the UK because it is a common word for the British.
As additional info, We mostly use イングランド when we talk about soccer.
As Kamei-san said, Japanese has lots of words for England and the UK because we have long history.
But recently, 英国(えいこく)is mostly for written Japanese, like newspaper and エゲレス is really historic word because we used it long time ago.

I will preface my comment by noting that I am learning as well so in all particulars I defer to the 先生たち　comprising the JPod101 staff. My observation is that the British appear to occupy a very special place in Japan, so much so that there are, or were, multiple ways to express England, a few examples of which I can provide below:

英国　or エイコク　which appears to be an archaic form. Or may at any rate to have fallen into disuse.

エゲレス is another form that can be found. It is thought that this is derived from the Dutch word “Engelsch.”

Finally, there is イングランド for England and イギリス人　for English people. These final forms appear to represent the most common usage.

Second, ポンド is the correct representation of the British pound. However, I can also find a character that combines 金 with 旁 (in the manner done in this example 鏡) that purportedly means “pound sterling.” I can not find this kanji in recent Japanese dictionaries (and scanning and attaching in this forum is problematic)…

Koko ha ENGLAND desu. Bokutachi ha POUND wo mochiimasu.

(The computer I’m currently using doesn’t display kana and kanji.)

Question: Can you spell England as INGURANDO in katakana, or is there a certain word for “England” in Japanese?
Also, is “pound” spelt PONDO or PAUNDO in kana?

500円札！That’s so なつかしい～ .
500円玉 came into use in 1982.
According to wiki, 500円札 was manufactured (printed??) until 1985 and commonly used until late 80s or early 90s.

Hmmm. I seem to remember a 500 円　note when I was there between 1970 and 1976 and 100 円 was the largest coin denomination. I wonder when this changed? I am more sure about the existence of the 500 円札　than I am of the non-existence of the 500 円玉 at the time.

I’m working my way through this lesson again, because I found that the shift to Japanese style numbers very very confusing. In the pdf, I found this question:

5.nana-sen go-hyaku ni-jū yon（七千百二十四）→_

In the kana portion, it appears that it says nana-sen hyaku ni-jū yon, ie 7124 not 7524. Am I reading this typo correctly?

Finally, is there a way to make iTunes (mac) open pdf’s with Adobe Acrobat or Reader, rather than with Preview? It’s really annoying to have to reveal the file in the finder and then select Open With… Does anyone know how to do that?

Unfortunately, my preference for the 100-yen coin has no deeper meaning than the fact that I think it’s the most aesthetically pleasing. Its weight, thickness, the font of the ‘100,’ and the three flowers on the back are what really do it for me. If I did coin tricks, I would do them with the 100-yen coin.

I remember Eric said that 5 yen is Naomi’s favorite coin. I know it’s from the cultural meaning of “ご縁(good karma)”. Then Eric said his favorite is 100 yen. Does that have a cultural meaning too?

Anyway, I’m running Adobe Reader 9 on my Mac without the ability to print. Hopefully, this will be improved or corrected in a later version. But the lack of support from technical service people at JP101 and KC101 pretty much speaks for itself.
