Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com. Let’s face it. Some things just can’t be done. “I can’t make it to the meeting.” Some things will never happen. “I would never do that!” You need to express these types of things in Japanese. And, it’s critical that you’re clear when you assert yourself. Talk about what can’t and won’t be done with authority and style.

This upper intermediate Japanese lesson is designed to help you express things that can’t be done and that will never happen. It sounds negative, but it’s all part of truly mastering the Japanese language. Learn to use kko nai to say there is no way something will happen. Learn to set limits with this important JapanesePod101.com lesson.

Mina-san, There are people who just want to watch your kids try their best instead of focusing on taking pictures and videos. What do you think?

After being prompted to download Japanese fonts, I am able to copy/paste 漢字 etc. from the PDF!! :dogeza:

Did this happen a while back and I didn’t notice?!?

(Now I will go back to the beginner lessons  )

avatar Thomas Rike says:

The pdf for the lesson notes has an error (I don’t know what, but Adobe Reader says so.) The fonts are generic and quite ugly after a 13 Mb download. Preview on the Mac won’t even attempt to show the Japanese but just prints empty boxes. Hopefully, you will redo this PDF. Thanks.

BTW, I love everything about what you guys are doing and how you do it.

avatar Enrico says:

very interesting lesson, however, Acrobat complained of the file and half of the English translation in the MP3 is missing

Hmm, this PDF looks perfect on Windows (Vista SP1) + Adobe Reader 8 + Japanese font download.

avatar Thomas Rike says:

Apparently works with Vista according to ?(???). Is this name? also sue to a problem with my browser. Anyway, I decided to try it with my Windows XP system which I do not want to use except in an emergency. (I am using a MacBookPro with OS X 10.5.5 ) Had to dowload Japanese fonts and got the same ugly result. The font is Helvetica and the Japanese font looks like a font for elementary school children. The previous three years of pdfs are fine. Although it is now possible to cut and paste in this new format, I have no desire to cut and paste and prefer the previous font.

avatar Highbridge says:

avatar Mayumi says:

We apologize for the half translation, and we’ll fix it as soon as possible.
:dogeza:

avatar João Paulo says:

I also still can’t open the PDF.

It was completely blank in Windows and just shows boxes in Mac.

The Kanji Close-Up is okay, though.

avatar Mayumi says:

Hello Everyone.

New PDFs are showing up (some of you already have them) and will require an update to your Adobe Reader if you are not already using the latest version (9).

You can download the latest version of Adobe Reader here:

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_allversions.html

The latest Adobe Reader will automatically download any necessary fonts. Some of the benefits of these new PDFs are:

* Searching PDFs now work (it did not work in the old PDFs)
* COPY / PASTE now works - this is very useful to people studying and trying to take notes elsewhere
* The PDFs are now compatible with special accessibility software (ie. screen readers)
* There are bookmarks already in place for you to quick-click

**Mac users will need to use Adobe Reader 9 instead of Preview.

avatar Brian says:

avatar neil.m4 says:

I had to download a new Adobe update - but the files are fine on my English OP Windows XP.

BTW - What’s the difference between っこない and わけがない。 Is the first more formal or something?

Neil

Enrico-san,

Sorry for the inconvenience.
We have added the missing translation. :dogeza:

avatar Bob1 says:

Please explain the advantage of the the new Acrobat Reader 9 only lesson note pdfs. All I perceive is extra inconvenience for Mac users.

avatar Hiroko says:

avatar Bob1 says:

To answer my own question, there is a discussion thread in the forum dealing with this:

http://www.japanesepod101.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3602

Quoting from the 2nd post, which is by cwabbott of Japanesepod101:

* Searching PDFs now work (it did not work in the old PDFs)
* COPY / PASTE now works - this is very useful to people studying and trying to take notes elsewhere
* The PDFs are now compatible with special accessibility software (ie. screen readers)
* There are bookmarks already in place for you to quick-click

So these are compelling arguments for the change. I have installed Acrobat Reader 9, and some of the extra files required to view Japanese, along with the Safari plugin, so things are working for me. I do think that JPod101 missed a beat here by not running a news podcast justifying and warning of the change before many of us subscribers were treated to the nasty shock of seeing ticky-tacky little boxes on the pageside.

avatar Jenks says:

Whats that guys name, Peter right?
Peter, translating 運動会 as Sports Day is clever. Good job mang. :)
