BTW - I vaguely remember listing to some lesson or other on Jpod101 that said something along the lines of … that … the origin of the expression しょうがない, し方がない comes from 塩がない. Was I dreaming or is that correct? I have asked some Japanese friends - and they all say that I must be mistaken.

if I remember correctly, it was just a way to remember しょうがない
since 塩がない and しょうがない sounds similar

There is a certain yojijukugo you should do. It’s “四面楚歌”. It was tought to me by a japanese friend and I think it is interesting.

neil.m4 san> しょうがない came from the word 仕様がない(しようがない) and the Kanji 仕様 express the way you behave or the way things happen, so originally 仕様がない meant “there’s no method or way of doing things”, but then began to be used as ” can’t do anything about it” or ” can’t help it”
harry san> There’s an interesting story behind that Yojijukugo too
