Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! Did you ever think of meeting your neighbors before you signed the lease? Kind of an interview in disguise. You know, just walking over and introducing yourself. In Japan, this custom takes place after you have already moved in. In this lesson, we’re going to learn how to introduce yourself to the neighbors and carry out the customs we’ve discussed in the previous lessons.

The focus of this lesson is the grammar point totemo –nai, which is used in a negative construction clause to strengthen the negative meaning. It is equivalent to “not — possibly.”

What gift would you give your neighbor if you moved to a new place?

avatar Eric says:

手土産ならチョッコレトが良いと思う。
誰にもチョッコレトに目がないんじゃない。

avatar プチクレア says:

私もチョコレートがいい手土産だと思います。でも日本には普通にどんな手土産をおくりますか?

avatar Triedge says:

Is there a reason why the English translation was missing from the audio file? And, the repeat of the dialog, which is usually at the end of the mp3 file, was also missing this time…

avatar Sean Somers says:

For some reason, the lesson notes .pdf did not appear in my iTunes download . . . or perhaps it’s just me?

avatar JapanesePod101.com says:

Triedgeさん、thanks for pointing this out. i’ll look into it tomorrow morning first thing!!

when the new file is uploaded, i’ll make a post too. 申し訳ございません! :dogeza:

avatar Mique says:

引っ越したときご近所さんへ持っていく手土産は、最近はタオルとか洗剤が普通です。値段は200~300円程度。
昔は「引越し蕎麦(そば)」といって蕎麦を配ったそうです。側(そば)に引っ越してきたという意味との掛け言葉らしいですよ。

avatar Hiroko says:

Triedge さん、Thank you for your patience! It’s fixed now! :dogeza:

Sean Somersさん、Looks like it’s working…could you try again? :dogeza:

Miqueさん>引越し蕎麦!おもしろいですね  最近は、物騒で、隣の人に顔を知られないためにわざと挨拶に行かない人も増えてきたようです。

I thought this was an exceptionally well-written and useful series. I love it when complex phrase patterns get broken down bit by bit. And I thought the editing is just about reaching a sweet-spot now, with digressions that are fun enough - but also brief enough - to keep us really engaged, like the little riff on the Urban Rooster today.

Plus, Naomi+Natsuko+Peter is definitely the JPod101 A-List: the three of you have an excellent chemistry that just keeps improving.

It’s been 19 months since I started listening to these lessons: the podcast is so embedded into my 日課, I can hardly remember what life was like before. Y’all have taken me from total novice to this level, and it just keeps getting better.
