What do you like? Saying what you like and don’t like is critical to your survival in a foreign country. Japan is no different. But did you know that we can use the same grammatical pattern to express things that you are good at and bad at doing? It’s true. And it couldn’t be easier! Today we will learn the attributive use of the particle ga in Japanese. It sounds like a mouthful, but you’ll be surprised how useful it is. We’ll learn to express likes, dislikes and abilities. It’s a very important Japanese grammatical construction, so you don’t want to miss this Beginner Japanese lesson!

Mina-san,
Golf is extremely popular among Japanese businessmen. Is it popular where you live too?

Great lesson, as usual! I’ve looked all over the internet, and you guys are absolutely the best at this.

One question: I recently got an iphone, and wanted to take advantage of the “my feed” option I always hear Peter talking about. Is that available to freeloading listeners like myself?

I’m trying to focus on the beginner/lower intermediate lessons, and would love to customize my podcasts around that…

Anyways, thanks again thanks for these awesome lessons!

When nominalizing verbs in a sentence, how do you use multiple verbs? Does の go after each verb?

Honchosan says:

The Romaji and English interpretations are incomplete…They are sut off following the comment “I’ll call my second born son”

Honchosan says:

Thaat should read “cut-off”

Watashi takusan no koto o suru no ga suki, TENISU o asobu koto toka, nihongo o manabu koto toka, Japanesepod101.com o kiku koto toka!

Just wanted to once again say how much I love Japanesepod101. I’ve never had a class, but I’ve taught myself since the 4th grade, and this is a phenomenal tool for studying! I started a Japanese club at my high school (where I teach Japanese) and I’ve highly recommended this to my 10+ students.

Mata ashita!

maxiewawa says:

Nice to hear you’re having fun! Just remember that “asobu” means “play” as in “have fun” but not “play” as in “play a game”.

Ganbatte kudasai!

先生。。。私まだ 「は」と「が」の使うのほうが よく わからないんですけど。。。
どんな時 「は」ですか? どんな時 「が」ですか? 教えてください

avatar
Mayumi says:

beandesu-san

For example, when you answer a who or what question, you’ll use が in place of は.

Q:明日、誰がここにきますか。
A:太郎が来ます。(×太郎は来ます。)

Q:きょうは、何が安いですか。
A:くだものが安いです。(×くだものは安いです。)

Hope that would be of any help!

Oh, verb+の is a gerund? I’ve seen this pattern a few times before and never quite understood it. Thanks for this lesson!

夏休みがほしいです。テニスをするのが好きですけれど、苦手です。

avatar
Sebastian says:

Ok, I listened to this lesson again and I have a question.

Is these a difference between these two sentences?
アメリカに行きます。
アメリカに行くのです。

avatar
Naomi says:

Sebastian-san
>>Oh, verb+の is a gerund?
>>夏休みがほしいです。テニスをするのが好きですけれど、苦手です。
→ This の is called nominalizer in Japanese grammar term. It’s like English gerund “-ing”.
As you may have already realized, “Verb(dictionary)+no” change the verb into a noun.

>>Is these a difference between these two sentences?
>>アメリカに行きます。
>>アメリカに行くのです。
Meaning wise, there’s no difference.
However [verb] のです or [verb] んです is used when the speaker’s explaining something, so when the speaker is answering a question such as “where are you going?”, the speaker tend to say アメリカに行くんです or アメリカに行くのです。 . (1st sentence アメリカに行きます is still OK as an answer though. )
This grammar is covered in beginner series season 5 Lesson 3. So please check that lesson too.

I hope this helps.

Sebastian says:

ありがとうございます、Naomi先生。 It will take me some time to get to Season 5, but I look forward to it

せんせい、ワシングトン、dc に ゴルフはとても人気です。私はゴルフプレーするが苦手です。

avatar
Naomi says:

亀井-san
私もゴルフをするのが苦手です。I’m not good at playing golf either.

ゴルフをプレーする or ゴルフをする = To play golf

avatar
亀井マイク says:

なおみ先生、
どうもありがとうございます。
私はゴルフが名詞しか忘れてしました・

I think that is right for “I forgot that golf may only be a noun,” unlike English where it may be both a verb and noun.

頑張ります!

マイ says:

私は日本語を勉強するのが大好きです。直美背性と亀井さん、もゴルフをすろのが苦手です。
I love to learn Japanese. Naomi-sensei and 亀井-san, I am also not very good at golf.

ゴルフはゲラネダにポピュラーではありません、でもアメリカにポピュラーですよ(アメレカは私の出身です)。
Golf isn’t popular in Grenada, but it is in America (which is where I’m from).

avatar
マイ says:

Whoops, I meant, “I love learning Japanese”.

avatar
Motoko says:

マイさん
That’s good! We will help your learning!
By the way, Grenada is グレナダ.
Keep listening and learning.

avatar
亀井 says:

私はエンジニアです。ゴルフクラブは道具です。この道具は、掘削のために意図されています。私はゴルフプレーする時は、ゴルフ地は新しい穴を取得します。。。

avatar
Motoko says:

亀井さん
ゴルフクラブであなを掘りますか
ゴルフをプレーするのは難しいですね。

avatar
亀井 says:
