About “お嬢さんを下さい,” I agree with you! When I got married, I told my husband (not husband at that time yet) not to say “お嬢さんを下さい” to my father, because I’m not owned by my father.

Very funny lesson!
Higashi doesn’t waste any time with small talk, does he? No hellos, or “How are you?”, or “Did you have a nice day”? Just right to the point: “I want your daughter!!” And with bad grammar to make it even worse……No wonder Dad was in a state of shock. Can’t wait to see what comes next in this very amusing series.

Hi, this is a really great site. I live out here on Okinawa and I’m definitely telling my friends about this site.
I’m a bit confused as to the use of uchi in the last sentence:
Uchi no kaisha ga hoshii ka?
my house’s company, do you want? Why is house/inside even used? Why can’t he just say Kaisha ga hoshii ka?
Sunday at 10:33 am
J, uchi is sometimes used to mean “me” or “i’ with personal things. Like people (my daughter hiroko) might be “uchi no hiroko”. You wouldn’t say “uchi no playstation 3″ because it’s not so personal.
Sunday at 11:36 am
Ok, so it can be used as direct replacement for watashi no, but only for very personal things. Thanks a bunch.

I think the notes for this lesson have a small mistake - in the notes he introduces himself as “Ozoya Seiya” instead of Ozora Haruya. Or then it’s some joke I’m not getting…
Thanks for another great lesson!

みんなさん、今日は!
I’m looking at the notes for this lesson (PDF file) and the formal English translation of the conversation seems to be missing some sentences. I think Ōzora Haruya is trying to say that he wants to be married but I dont see that reflected in the English translation.

Thank you so much for letting us know. I’ll fix it right away.

こんにちは、
はじめて日本語を勉強したとき、「私はメーさんです」よく言っていました。
also, when someone asked 「お元気ですか?」。 I often answered 「はい、お元気です。」
恥ずかしかったですね。
最近も、間違いがあります。。。時々ですね。
Friday at 11:34 am
>>>「私はメーさんです」よく言っていました。
Did anyone call you “メーサンさん”then?
Friday at 12:53 pm
なおみ先生.
いいえ。笑われた。
They just laughed at me.
Saturday at 8:40 am
I was wondering when Mr. Tendo was asking Haruya what he wanted - His house, money or company, the particle “ka” was used. Is the meaning here a “question” or “or”.
Thanks so much - Mark
Monday at 1:13 pm
mark -san
That “ka” indicates a question.
Wednesday at 11:57 pm
Minnasan,
I was wondering if anyone knows of a good website where i can download font or a program that allows me to type in hiragana which in turn converts to kanji. I have microsoft word, but I am not sure what steps to take from there.
best regards to all,

私は家に行きたい、それからバージニアに行きたい。
I want to go home, and then I want to go to Virginia. Actually, I’m really doing just that this Christmas. When I get home for Christmas break, I’m helping my family move to Virginia. We’re all really excited about it.
本当に、私たちはそれが嬉しいです。
We’re really happy about it.
Monday at 11:14 am
マイ-san
“to go home” is usually translated as 家に帰る-literally “to return home” in Japanese.
So if you replaced, 家に行きたい with 家に帰りたい, your sentence sounds even better.
Tuesday at 11:45 pm
直美先生、ありがとうございました。
⸤私は家に帰りたし⸣
もちろん、もうそれでいいです。
Of course, that is much better. I forgot about 帰る
