Feeling the cash crunch in Tokyo? It’s easy to spend to much money in Tokyo. But in this series, we’ll give you the tips and language skills you need to save money in Japan! In today’s episode, two Japanese hosts are talking about how to save (or the case of the guy with a sugar mommy, how to spend!) their hard earned yen.
In today’s Japanese lesson, we’ll review useful vocabulary for discussing finances. Then we’ll learn how to use the -ba conditional with yokatta, the past tense of the Japanese adjective ii, which means good. This is how you say “I wish” in Japanese. This useful expression is often used in everyday Japanese conversation, so it’s an important grammar point to learn if you want to master Japanese.

Mina-san, お疲れ様でした!
The series draws to a close. We hope this lesson comes in handy for any of you living in or visiting Japan!
What was your favorite part?
probably the 1st part where he was opening the bank account
because I didn’t know what the terms for the different bank accounts in Japanese but now I do

普通預金は minimum balance がありません。
貯蓄用口座は minimum balance があります。でも、interest rateが普通預金よりも高いです。
I really liked this lesson’s mention of ~ば + よかったのに. It reminded me of a memorable line I came across in a book recently. I’ve read this book many times in English and have been attempting to read the Japanese translation for practice (and fun). 「デューン/砂の惑星」というすばらしい本です。次は日本語訳と原作からです。
“あのいまいましいジェシカ! 命令されたとおり、女の子を生んでいてさえくれればよかったのに!”
“Damn that Jessica! If only she’d borne us a girl as she was ordered to!”
~ば+さえ+よかったのに+!=けっこう強い感情じゃないでしょうか。ところで、「いまいましい」は失礼かな~と思っていましたが。
Tom-san
「デューン/砂の惑星」…すごく長くて、難しそうな本ですね。でも、面白そうです。
いまいましい は 強い言葉ですが、失礼な言葉ではないとおもいます。
I think imaimashii expresses strong feeling, but it’s not a rude word.
いまいましい is a written language so we don’t usually use いまいましい in a conversation.
My favorite part was learning …
This is a stick up. Do what I say and no will get hurt. Put all of the money in a bag.
”強盗だ!手を上げろ!言う通りにすれば誰も傷つかずにすむ。有り金を全部かばんに入れな!”
