I’d say it’s really wise to have kids wear helmets!
I’ve never thought about it, but it IS dangerous having kids in the front and the back without having them wear helmets!!
ヘルメットなしでは危ないですよね。　ヘルメットをさせるのはいいアイディアだと思いました。

I really enjoyed this lesson. I was one of the moms in central Tokyo that carried her kids back and forth to hoikuen on a bicycle! One in the front, and one in the “ombu himo”…and then later, one in the front and one in the back. However, I was the ONLY mom at that time (in the 1980s) that had her kids wear helmets–and the Japanese mothers thought I was pretty strange.

The illustrations are too funny!! The one for this episode has a nice touch of scary too–7 people (8 if you include the truck driver) 2 bikes & a truck all headed for that poor guy!! Ah yabai!!!

Both “Tsunde ita mattoresu ga ochita.” and “Tsunde atta mattoresu ga ochita.” sound fine to me.
　
However

The base of this sentence is a past progressive sentence

トラックはマットレスを積んでいた。
Torakku wa mattoresu o tsundeita.
The truck was carrying mattresses.
　　　　　＋
そのマットレスが落ちた。
Sono mattoresu ga ochita.
Those mattresses fall.
　　　　　↓
（トラックが）積んでいたマットレスが落ちた。
Torakku ga tsunde ita mattoresu ga ochita.

Hello,
I am just starting with JapanesePod101.com and I’m enjoying it very much!
I had a question about the “tsunde ita” mattresses. I thought that for transitive verbs, the phrase would be “tsunde aru” instead of “tsunde iru” … so why is it not “tsunde atta mattoresu”?
Sorry — this is probably a very basic question but it’s been bugging me for a few days so I just had to ask!
