Naomi

Actually, it's "pain au chocolat", which translate directly to "chocolate bread", but it's closer to croissant. Though it's shaped differently, it's croissant dough with one or two chocolate bars put in it before it's cooked. It's a much beloved bakery treat !

I searched my dictionaries yesterday, and found both チョコレートパンand チョコクロ as the translation. And actually the チョコクロ they sell in one of the coffee chain shops in Japan (I think it's St Marc) are the closest thing to real "pain au chocolat"...

"Pain au chocolat" is not to be confused with "pain avec du chocolat" (regular bread with chocolate bars added to it as a home-made mid-afternoon snack) and "croissant au chocolat" (croissant topped with melted chocolate and sometimes filled with chocolate cream too).
