Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! What a terrible night of sleep you had last night at your girlfriend’s parents’ house in Japan. The only good thing was that the nightmare didn’t last too long and it was over in time for you to get some good sleep afterwards. Do you suppose it was something you ate last night? Maybe it was that Japanese beer. Her father sure does like his beer. You hear the sounds of the household stirring and the smells of Japanese food. Well, you’re dressed and ready; you might as well start another day. You announce to the bustling family in Japanese, “Good morning.” Your girlfriend’s mother answers, “Good morning. Did you sleep well?” Hmm…how do you answer that without seeming rude? You know how to say what you need to in Japanese, but should you tell her about the nightmare? Will she be upset that you didn’t sleep well in her house? Your knowledge of Japanese customs and culture is not enough to help you here. Better to stick with polite Japanese phrases, so you bring out your most polite Japanese and reply in Japanese, “Yes, thank you. Something smells really good.” Smiling and obviously pleased with your choice, she replies in Japanese, “I am cooking breakfast! What would you like?” You decide on the safe route again, replying in Japanese, “It all smells so wonderful! Some yogurt and fruit would be delicious, please.” Obviously, you are doing something right; your girlfriend is simply beaming!

I agree with Rebekah about English, the conjugation rules are much more complicated, and there are so many exceptions that they aren’t much help anyway. I don’t envy people learning it as a second language :???:

朝ご飯はコーヒーだけ飲みます。作って食べるより、あと10、15分ぐらい眠る方がいいと思いますよね。だからといって、朝ご飯としてシリアルやフルーツなどが好きじゃないわけじゃありません。ただ、朝に弱いんです

I just can’t go without breakfast… it’s the one meal of the day for which I can actually take time for myself, and know for sure that it will take place, and when. So even if it means a little less sleep, I’d rather wake up for my breakfast.

いつもシリアルとフルーツジュースとヨーグルトとお茶です.週末はチョコクロも食べます!でも日本にいる時、いつも和食を食べます。納豆が好きなのに、朝ご飯は納豆を食べたことがありません。

My breakfast is usually toast and something like miso-soup left over from the dinner for the previous night.

Naomi先生、

はい、そうです!
Actually, it’s “pain au chocolat”, which translate directly to “chocolate bread”, but it’s closer to croissant. Though it’s shaped differently, it’s croissant dough with one or two chocolate bars put in it before it’s cooked. It’s a much beloved bakery treat !

I searched my dictionaries yesterday, and found both チョコレートパンand チョコクロ as the translation. And actually the チョコクロ they sell in one of the coffee chain shops in Japan (I think it’s St Marc) are the closest thing to real “pain au chocolat”…

“Pain au chocolat” is not to be confused with “pain avec du chocolat” (regular bread with chocolate bars added to it as a home-made mid-afternoon snack) and “croissant au chocolat” (croissant topped with melted chocolate and sometimes filled with chocolate cream too).

お腹が空いてなっちゃった!でも今朝ご飯の時間ですから、大丈夫ですよ!いただきます!
