Have Fun Learning Japanese at JapanesePod101.com! We’re continuing to take a look at asking and giving directions in Japanese. Yasumi has started his journey and is going to change trains at Ikebukuro station (one of the 3 busiest train stations in the world!). There are a lot of different types of trains, including local and express. So he’ll have to ask which is the right train to take. Our grammar point is nara, a conditional form of the copula. After listening, stop by JapanesePod101.com and be sure to leave us a post!

Mina-san, have you ever jumped on the express train when you should have taken the local and ended up in absolutely the wrong place?

This is turning out to be a really useful series!
Making conditional statements, asking/giving directions, different types of trains.
Can’t wait to see what the party is like!

Big problem, taking the wrong train… I’d rather ask multiple times and make sure I’m on the right one. Especially since there are so many different trains in Japan.

I never took the wrong one, but once I had to get from Narita to Asakusa, and for some reason (well, I thought it was way too expensive…) I didn’t take the Skyliner but some local train. I got to Asakusa all right, but when it was time to leave Japan, I never did find the train going the other way… (so I finally ended up in the skyliner…)

In the conversation, the 乗客 says, そう思いますけど、But I thought that correct was, そうだと思いますけど、

avatar のり says:

Rhys-san

そう思います and そうだと思います are both correct and the meaning is also the same.

speaking of trains please kill fabrizio off in a terribly bloody train accident. I am think a cockroach comes near his feat and in a panick he loses his balance and falls on the tracks of the yamonote sen. In its place please make lessons with 1kyu and 2kyu grammar. Thank you.

本当に、成田へ行く電車は本当に分かりにくいですよね。I hate taking train to Narita.
I searched on the Internet and found out that they do have a train goes to Narita from Asakusa.(1060yen) But they don’t run very often.

Whenever I see a lost 日本人 in 上海 I try to help them out. They always look a bit embarassed though, and respond with いえいえ、大丈夫です, no matter how politely I conjugate my verbs.
