Have Fun Learning Japanese at JapanesePod101.com! We return to the 4th installment of this series in which Tom the American is trying to nampa (hit on) Junko the cute Japanese girl. So far everyone around here seems to think he’s a slime ball, but who knows? Maybe today he’ll turn around and act like a gentleman! (Or not.) Our grammar point is a pretty tricky one, yō ni iu. We’ll also talk a little bit about ~te oku and ~te miru. After listening, stop by JapanesePod101.com and be sure to leave us a post!

Mina-san, this Tom guy is something else, huh? The hosts seemed to think Junko-chan is trying to send Tom to Misa-chan. I tend to think there is no “Misa-chan.” What do you think?
Mina-san, there was a problem with the Video Vocab today (no audio). So we’re having it remade and will post it as soon as it’s available. Sorry for the inconvenience.
I wonder if Misa-chan might not turn out to be 2m tall, weight 120kg, do pro-wrestling for a living an be Junko’s older brother or boyfriend…
No matter how it turns out, I’m with Junko. This guy Tom is soooo creepy he deserves whatever he gets.

笑っていたのは、ゆういちさんの日本語が変だったからです。 ![]()
The reason we were laughing was Yuichi’s Japanese didn’t sound natural at all.
Peter:え?なんでですか? Eh? Nande desu ka?
Yuichi:みささんはじゅんこさんの友達ですもん。…ですもん(?)…おかしいですね。
Misa-san wa Junko-san no tomodachi desu mon. ….desumon…. okashiidesune.
(Yuichi said the phrase and he realized that his sentence sounded strange.)
It’s not grammatically wrong or anything, but the way he said it was bit unnatural.

トムは確かにキモイけど、ほかにも二人キモイ人たちがいますよね。
イントロに出てくる、醜猿と醜田です。(こんな苗字の人は日本にはいません
)
どっちがキモイですか?
Tom really is creepy, but there are 2 more creepy guys besides Tom.
They are Shikosawa and Shikoda from the intro.(There are no such family names in Japan)
Which is creepier?
Why is that nearly almost lesson has the voice actors over animating their voice? I mean nobody here in Japan talks like that making the lessons not very practical. I love the site its just increasingly hard to justify my premium membership when the lessons have great content but delivered in such a ridiculous way. Perhaps this is great for anime nerds but not for serious learners.
Do you watch much Japanese TV?
Plus they said he’s speaking with a regional accent.
I don’t know… I guess I see a pretty good mix of funny stories and serious ones.
I’m not an anime nerd, actually I hate the stuff. But if it’s too serious all the time it’s boring, just like my Japanese classes. I learn a lot more practical stuff here.

Yes I watch Japanese television as I live here
Strangely I don’t hear people talk like that on shows except for maybe anime which is something I don’t watch. I didn’t mean to be offensive it just strikes me as silly that a website that exists to help you learn/improve Japanese delivers their content in an impractical way. Not only that but many of the situations are so far from reality that the lesson regardless of the whacky voices are not useful anyways.
