kuruma to itaria no kuruma to amerika no kuruma to...*ahem*.....I like all cars really. Fast cars of course! I own an 06 Dodge Charger Daytona edition. I love driving it, but when I visited Tokyo, I didn't miss driving. I was having a blast and didn't mind walking everywhere. But maybe that's because there was so much to see for me :) I miss Tokyo :'(

Jacob san,
As Naomi sensei said, adjectives indicate “ability”, “desire”, “preference” or “emotion" require ga to mark objects.
ex) watashi wa yakyuu ga tokui desu.
    I am good at baseball.

watashi wa PS3 ga hoshii desu.
    I want a PS3.

watashi wa ringo ga suki desu.
    I like apples.
I hope this helps:smile:

Jacob-san
I don't think what you're talking about is not really matter in this case, but what king of adjective you're using is more important.

If you're using "itai -painful", the part which aches is usually marked by particle "ga" not "wa".

For takai either sentence pattern I introduced is OK.
And for pattern (2), particle "wa" can be replaced with particle "ga", so your sentence, "Nihon no furuutsu GA takai desu" is also OK.
It just that your sentence sounds like you're comparing with something else.

Hey, sorry to bother you again, but i was just reading over the last 5 posts and Naomi says in sentance pattern 2

'2. [Subject] no [ something ] wa [ adjective] desu.
=”subject’s something is adjective”
ex) Nihon no furuutsu wa takai desu “Japanese fruits are expensive.”

But when talking about my eye we are using

[Subject] no [ something ] GA [ adjective] desu

Why is this, and why couldn't we say 'watashi no me WA itai desu'
Or 'Nihon no furuutsu GA takai desu'

Thanks again

Jacob-san,

‘watashi no me ga itai desu’ - this is stating that your eye hurts, but as Japanese does not use pronouns when the subject is obvious, it would be more natural just to say 'me ga itai desu'.

‘watashi wa me ga itai desu’ - this sounds as if you're comparing yourself to someone else; for example, if you were standing with some friends talking about your aches and pains, and your friend said 'watashi wa nodo ga itai desu' (my throat hurts), you could reply with 'as for me, my eye hurts' (‘watashi wa me ga itai desu’) and it would sound natural.

Sorry, one more thing
if i were to say 'my eye hurts'
i could use both: 'watashi wa me ga itai desu' (as for me, eyes hurt)
OR i could say 'watashi no me ga itai desu' (my eye hurts)
Which would be preferrable?

Jacob-san
The grammar point we're talking about is -suki and -kirai.
For suki and kirai, you have to mark the object you like or hate with particle "ga". You CAN NEVER say "watashi no neko ga suki desu" to mean "I like cats."

I don't know which website you're talking about, but are you sure they said that sentence pattern applied to ANY adjectives?

The sentence patterns you're taking about are probably...
1. [Subject] wa [something ] ga [ adjective] desu.
="as for subject, something is adjective"
ex) Nihon wa furuutsu ga takai desu
"Talking about Japan, fruits are expensive" or "Fruits are expensive in Japan"
and
2. [Subject] no [ something ] wa [ adjective] desu.
="subject's something is adjective"
ex) Nihon no furuutsu wa takai desu "Japanese fruits are expensive."

They're both correct sentence structure. Which sentence pattern you use depends on the adjective and what you're talking about.
For adjective indicates "ability", "desire", "preference" or "emotion", you have to use the (1) pattern.

I hope this helps.
