Learn Japanese on Your Own Terms at JapanesePod101.com! Today is our final chapter in the unagi story. It seems that having arrived in Japan, our slimy friends have found nothing better to do than play pachinko (what else would unagi do in Japan?). As we already introduced how to use shi hajimeru and shi oeru to describe beginning and finishing actions, we will now look at -te shimau, which is used to describe actions which are fully completely - often with a tinge of disappointment. After listening, stop by JapanesePod101.com and be sure to leave us a post!

リーチって他の場面で使うんですか?例えばパソコンのゲームをしてる時とか。

私もお腹が空いてしまいます !!!ウナギを食べたいですよ!

Ok, a rather naive question : I thought you couldn’t directly win money at pachinko ? I’ve always heard that you won prizes that you …could…exchange for money, even though it wasn’t legal. Is that right ?

僕がうなぎを食べたことはありません。でも、ほしいはないでうよ。

It’s nice to hear that “bubble” sound conversation again. Are you planning to record future lessons under water??? That would sound really nice

I saw something on TV about that. You win the ball bearing things and exchange them for tokens at the parlour, which you then take round the corner to a little kiosk where can “buy” cigarettes and other things (I think yen as well) with the pachinko “currency”. Since you’re not winning the money at the parlour nobody can get busted.

「皆さん質問があるんですけど、リーチって他の場面で使うんですか?例えばパソコンのゲームをしてる時とか。」

→他にリーチを使う場面は、「ビンゴ」をするときに必ず使います。
When you play bingo, you definitely use the word “リーチ”.

リーチは「あともう一つで、そのゲームで勝てる」という時に使います。ビンゴの時に2つのリーチがあれば、「ダブルリーチ」、3つだったら「トリプルリーチ」という風にも使えますよ。
Riichi is used when one more point is needed to win the game. When you have two riichis, you can say “ダブルリーチ”, as for 3 riichis, “トリプルリーチ.”

DK says:

So it seems like ~てしまう is simply used to emphasize a verb right?
The casual forms really helped! I hear them all the time >_

Naomi says:

DK-san
Well…the usage [te form of verb]+しまう is a bit complicated.
It indicates completion of an action or event.(=finish -ing) It also indicates the speaker’s regret.(=Unfortunately…)

Please also check our beginner series season 6 lesson 2 and 3.
Beginner series season 4, 5 and 6 are more grammar oriented than beginner season 3. I’m sure you would find them more useful.
