Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! Some questions really startle a person. You can’t quite believe them. Sometimes, people ask questions so peculiar that you just don’t know what to do. It was an innocent discussion of cars: what you like, what you don’t like. Then out of the blue, your friend asks in Japanese, “Is a Lamborghini a type of Suzuki” How could anyone mix up Japanese sedans with the hottest Italian sports car on the planet? She’s your friend, and she’s really cute, so you can’t really break out laughing; that would be insulting. What do you say to a question like that? Maybe you misunderstood her…you don’t speak Japanese very fluently – yes, that must be it! Probably the best thing to do is to just try to keep a straight face and ask her in Japanese, “Do you like Italian sports cars…such as the Lamborghini? They are a lot sportier than Suzukis.” Giggling, she answers in Japanese, “Oh, my mistake. Yes, I like Lamborghinis a lot!” Well, it doesn’t really matter what she knows or doesn’t know; she’s a great singer, a good friend, and don’t forget, really cute and likeable.
Learning Japanese with JapanesePod101.com is the most fun and effective way to learn Japanese! This Japanese Newbie lesson is about what you like and don’t like, well, how to talk about them in Japanese anyway. Mina-san, in a fight to the death, who would win? Lamborghini or Ferrari?

Whichever one is a Transformer, I suppose.

Do you really use katakana for “honda” and “toyota”???
I was sure kanji was used!!!
僕も車に興味はありません - as long as it has four wheels and takes me where I need to go, it’s fine!!!
Monday at 8:31 pm
actually there is kanji for honda. 本田 (ホンダ)is a family name.
i haven’t seen kanji for toyota, but wiki says 豊田 (とよだ)was the original family name but they use katakana because it comes to 8 strokes which, apparently, is an auspicious number. 勉強になりました

I have an interest in sports cars !!! That is, I’d love to have one, either Porsche or Aston Martin… but in all honesty I don’t think I ever will…
and there’s also the fact that I can’t drive…
but if I could get the car, then I’d definitely learn !
Monday at 10:40 pm
Marky-san,
Thank you very much.
I knew they were family name, I was just surprised to see them in katakana.
Now, about Toyota, I’ve read something about “Toyoda” changing its name in order to get 8 strokes. Very intriguing story!!!

I was very interested in your discussion about love as I have just become engaged to Japanese women.
こにゃくしゃになって I hope that is correct.
It might make a good culture classs.
Love the lessons also, keep up the good work.
Tuesday at 2:49 am
How many Japanese women are you getting engaged to?

I just got a used car two weeks ago - a nice little German one. No sports car though.
You’ve always got to have an unfulfilled dream for your midlife crisis later.

With White Day coming up, did anybody else notice how deftly Naomi-sensei and Rebekah-sensei let it slip out that they like chocolate? Illustrating the use of 好き. Now that was slick.
Tuesday at 9:44 am
さすがBob1-san!!!!! That’s so true!!!! They are preparing their way through White Day.
I also remember hearing Naomi-sensei saying she likes Belgium chocolate recently.
And I thought that was just an ordinary comment. I still have a lot to learn!!!
Tuesday at 9:48 am
* Belgian chocolate…
Sorry all Belgians listeners out there for my spelling mistake!!!

Speaking of Japanese car names and their kanji. I have come across a Japanese auto parts seller who in an effort to gain some business abroad has translated all of his listings in english using a translating program but the results end up being a bit comical. One is when he is selling a Nissan. Nissan put through some online translators like yahoo japan’s will come out as DAILY OUTPUT which I though was kind of funny. Google translator gets it right but most seem to come up with DAILY OUTPUT for Nissan.
Now if I may get creepy for a second. I could listen to Rebekah’s (sp?) accent all day.

“Now if I may get creepy for a second. I could listen to Rebekah’s (sp?) accent all day.”
What do you mean “creepy”? She can use comments like that to press Peter for a higher salary! But of course you can listen to her voice all day. . . or at least until the battery on your iPod runs out.

I’m Belgian, but that’s ok.

Very good question! If they are sir names, they should be spelled as 本田(Honda), 豊田(Toyota or Toyoda), 鈴木(Suzuki) and they are very common sir names.
However those car makers are commonly spelled as …
ホンダ、トヨタ、スズキ.
That’s how they spell their company’s names in stock market.

>> sir names < <
「sir names」というのは、男の人の名前の事?
Hehe. Sorry, that one made me giggle.
Thursday at 5:26 pm
Heeee interesting, in China we only ever have the 漢字!

I mean …surname. family name. 失礼しました。

I was wondering if anyone had been able to download the Video Vocab file for this lesson? I have tried through iTunes and from the website with no success.
I hope you all are having a great year and thank you so much for these lessons. I heard Marky say that we are over 700 lessons. WOW! What an amazing feat. You guys ROCK!!!!

Hi, I have a question about “doko no” and “donna”. In the lesson they are both used to mean “what kind of”? Are they interchangeble or is there a reason why you would use one in one instance and the another in another instance? Does that make any sense? It’s early! Thanks so much! Oh, and I too love Rebekah’s accent!
Friday at 9:11 am
Bob
The difference is not explained.
I guess that doko no -presumably meaning “from where”- could better have been translated as “what make of car is this” to avoid the confusion.
But as the answer to donna-what kind of - is given as the make-Honda/Lamborghini -I am not sure how the English distinction of make v type is made.

Okayama-san, LOL!

I think Toyota was originally Toyoda, so maybe there is kanji for Toyoda.

Symbion-san
As markystar kindly mentioned above, the family name of the founder of Toyota Motor Corporation is 豊田(TOYODA). However the registered name of the company is トヨタ and it’s written in Katakana.
