Mina-san, there was an awkward period when every male character was named Kinoshita, one particular Kinoshita went shopping for clothes in a series called “What to Wear.” We decided to resurrect him in honor of the new season. We hope you enjoy him this time around too!

Welcome back Peter and Naomi-san. Why do I have a sneaking suspicion that Kinoshita-san will be leaving that store with more than just an AC adaptor.
btw is ‘Nihongo onchi’ an acceptable expression to use as an opening line when I visit Tokyo again in May. If so, I think I’m going to need it if my last trip was anything to go by. I wanna get that in before the locals use the ‘Nihongo jouzu’

押し入る is “to break in”, is it? Rikaichan doesn’t mention that meaning.
Anyone who finds the dialogue for this lesson a little easy, have a look at the intro, there’s more difficult vocab in it. It took me a few listens to get the joke though.

Interesting Lesson.
Especially the word 「音痴」, because in Korean we have the same word ( 음치 ) but the part 「音」(음 in Korean) drops when it’s combined with other words, 
so instead of 方向 + 音痴 –> 方向音痴、 we say 방향 + 음치 —> 방향치 (方向痴)
日本語でもしも「方向痴」って言うと日本人はあまり意味がわからないんですか？

Cool intro, although I couldn’t understand all of it. I think more セクシー~~~ギャル-related topics are what everybody needs to improve their Japanese 
For those who aren’t aware, 謙譲語 [けんじょうご] words (humble words) have 尊敬語 [そんけいご] (honorific) equivalents where appropriate, and vice-versa, which together make up 敬語 [けいご] (respectful language).
To use the examples in today’s lesson, the word, 見る, has both an honorific form ご覧 [ごらん], and a humble form 拝見 [はいけん]. The second word, 言う, has humble form 申す [もうす], and honorific form おっしゃる. It’s important to be aware of both the respectful forms of a word, because using the wrong one at the wrong time shows disrespect, which kind of defeats the object

Hey, late Happy New Years!
I dont have much time, but I was thinking yesterday at work that since you guys also have Japanese, Korean, the survival phrase languages, and now Spanish (which really hyped me)…
You guys ought to have a street team, since now you apeal to such a wide audience and have so many languages.
Anyway, Ide love doing something like that for you guys. People ask me alot how I study and i tell them I listen to you guys and im really surprised how few people even know about you.
Im in a rush! Looking forward to this next season!

Hey everybody, please keep me updated on what you think of the volume for the video vocabulary. I was agonizing over this subject and I thought I ended up with a good balance, but it looks like Newbie Lesson 56 slipped out without getting the right processing on the pronunciation tracks. Does this lesson sound better to everybody else?

German Rikaichan does mention it, though
But: Nelson character dictionary says “押し入れる push in, force in, squeeze in”, “押し入る break into” and “押し入り burglar, robber” 
Would love to be able to read tons of Japanese detective novels and find out for sure

The video vocabulary sounds better now, but I wouldn’t mind the music another nuance lower. I like the sound now, but how about after 2,000 repeats? Will I find it repelling? (I need frequent repeats to learn ) Anyway, if I get tired of the sound I’ll turn off the volume, read the ruby and exercise my own pronunciation.

Matt, I think it sounds fine but can I nitpick? I find the voices in the second half of the clip are more audible as there’s less frequencies in that piece of music competing with those of the vocal. The first piece is a tad brighter and therefore masks the voice a little. I don’t think there’s a volume problem. If you can, take out a little 2-5hz from the music and see how that sounds. But as I said, I’m nitpicking!

TempleUniJPさん、I ALWAYS tell people to check out these sites. Just today I was giving my friend at work the info for SPod101. For years he has wanted to learn and his girlfriend speaks it too. I might check it out, there are many Spanish-speaking people where I live. If I learn Japanese and Spanish, and brush up my Russian, I can be a polyglot like Fabrizioさん!

Point cards - Fond memories of me spending half an hour throwing them out of my wallet, agonizing over if I still wanted keep them. My wallet is much lighter now.

I know this is suppose to me Season 3 and a new generation that the last one but still it’s difficult to replace it.

One minor issue though;
I really like the addition of the video vocab, but I feel a little left out here.
Although I can watch it on my laptop, I can’t watch it on my Zen which reads basicly any file OTHER than .mov.
Would it be possible to have it available in .avi please? It would be a Godsend!
However if it’s not possible through itunes, then please direct download

stu さん If you know the word “—onchi”, you are NOT “nihongo onchi” at all as ”onchi” is quite advanced voab. I have never heard someone is saying “Watashi wa nihongo-onchi desu,” but I think people would understand the meaning.

Great question!
Basically, 品物 = goods (in general) 商品 = commercial goods, articles for sale.
At a store, you can merchandise as 品物 or 商品.
But after you purchase it, it becomes 品物.

I think you’re right, on this site, we should all use katakana. I don’t get an opportunity to use Japanese every day, as I live here in the states, so every opportunity to use it is golden. My opportunities are pretty much limited to the meetup group (once a month), here, thejapanesepage, when I attempt to read articles at jarl.or.jp, reading manga, and occasionally I am able to stir up some DX from that part of the world through one of my hobbies. (usually with one of the internet enhanced modes) (note my username in the forum to figure out the hobby, which has been mentioned here before.)

How come this lesson is so much bigger than, in terms of file size, than previous lessons? Most lessons on average are between 6-9 MB, but this one came in at 16.8MB.

I don’t get many opportunities to use my Japanese other than in these comment sections or with my friends in Japan via Skype. Although there is a Japanese “mall” near me where I practice at times. They had a sake tasting one day and I asked the girl questions about the different brands in Japanese. The look on her face was priceless, she was totally caught off guard! Should have gotten her phone number, 残念でした

that show is as low budget as we are!! that particular music ships free with every Mac computer. it’s from a set of samples called iLife. because they’re all pervasive i try not to use them, but in this particular case i couldn’t whip up anything better.

My friend uses this same music for his podcast. I was laughing when I heard it because I expected him to start on a political rant. BTW, what software do you use to make this podcast?
