Mina-san, we’ve gotten so much positive feedback about the intros, but people are always asking for translations or explanations. For better or worse, there are a lot of references to Japanese Culture that might be obvious to native speakers, but for learners it can be a little esoteric… well, that’s why we did this!

it’s funny you pointed that out. because i don’t even think about it anymore. certain words become standard words among foreigners in japan.

things i hear a lot of by non-japanese speakers are:

携帯 is usually preferred over cell/mobile phone.

しょうがない gets used a lot

でしょ？is used as a tag question (to a point that it’s annoying, because over use of this word is conspicuously feminine)

ケースバイケース　(case by case) instead of “depends,” i can understand this phrase but i never heard it used until i came here.

using “from” with dates and time (as in “there’s a meeting from 9″ instead of “there’s a meeting at 9″ - pretty sure that’s incorrect in american english, but it’s usual in japanese: ９時からミーティングがあります)

お猿 for “monkey”

Why would you want to know that? That takes all fun out of it!

Those intros are awesome. Even when I don’t understand anything being said, I find myself laughing at the style. Honto ni sugoi!!

I love all the new intros. It was fun getting a peek behind the scenes of how you made them. They’re all so good, it’s hard to have a favorite. I guess I’d have to say mine also is Natsuko’s horse racing commentary. A close second, since I don’t live in Japan anymore, is the ones that are based on very common public announcements, like “The time at the tone will be….Japanese Pod 101!”, or the Japanese pod 101 subway train will be arriving momentarily. Some other such notices (which I don’t think you’ve done) have to do with riding escalators, and “The number you’ve dialed is no longer in service…”

The lessons are also great too!
