Learn Japanese at JapanesePod101.com! Japan has a lot of famous customs. One of the most time consuming customs is writing and sending nengajō (New Year’s greeting cards). Some people handwrite hundreds of these cards every year. Of course, these days, a lot of people are taking shortcuts. After listening, stop by JapanesePod101.com and be sure to leave Miki a post!

I think the video is really great. Great revision of words. Please have more. May be a flash file is better? Smaller file? Easier to do? I think overall it is a great idea.

avatar Peter says:

Watermen, thanks for the feedback! Yes, we’re planning to enter this into the premium rotation. :) We arleady have some changes planned, and your feedback is putting us on the path toward more: :)
Please keep the feedback coming.

avatar クリストファー・ハート (KC8UFV) says:

Waterman - Flash is harder to play, if you aren’t using a full PC or MAC. Many people use iPods, and I use my WM5 PDA. A video file is better for these.

wow very cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hope to have another great yeah learning with you guys n girls

im still a noob merry xmas all!!!!!!!!

avatar Frank says:

Great idea, although could use some polishing. Here’s my feedback:

1) The English words don’t need to be repeated. For English speaking listeners, saying the word in English once is plenty. I even have reservations about having the word written in English on the screen. The goal is to associate Japanese words with actual ideas, not with their corresponding English words. In other words, more Japanese, less English.

2) You will probably do this anyway–new vocab entries need to be categorized by difficulty. “No good” and “stay at home Dad” are not exactly in the same category

Fantastic job, keep the ideas coming!

avatar Jeffrey says:

Love the video! Great Idea.

avatar will mitchell says:

Its def nice to see the videos made me remember the ilove series– can we please have more video based lessons this year ?!??!?!? :nihon:

avatar Liz21 says:

Frank-san,
I think this video was a “sample”, so it included both easy and hard words as examples! :nihon:

avatar midgiemon says:

thank you SOO MUCH japanesepod101!
i’m studying japanese for my final exams in year 12 in two years and these videos have been great! i agree with waterman, downloadable videos would really be great so i can put them on my ipod!
once again, THANKYOU
have a merry christmas everyone :D

avatar Peter says:

Midgiemon-san, thank’s for the inquiry! We have an ambitious plan to include these with the videos with each lesson!
It will be available for download each day for premium subscribers.

avatar Katie says:

ども ありがとう ございます!! この ブィデオ わ かっこい!! :kokoro: だい すき! :D

Please do keep them coming, it is a great way to review vocabulary quickly! I love having both the kanji with the hiragana on the top- that is incredibly useful!! ^_^b

You guys seem to keep getting better and better- perhaps I’ll subscribe this year!

メーリ クリスマス! (:

avatar Joshua says:

Wow! That video was really amazing. One of the best things I’ve seen for learning new words. Is it only for the premium people, or will there be something for those of us that only use the free resources?

Also, the music was a really great touch!

avatar besu says:

Great sample! Keep it coming!
これは最初のメッセージです!いろいろありがとうございました!
来年もよるしくお願いします.
These video vocab lessons will be my New Years Resolution

avatar Marshdrifter says:

Thanks for the video. That’s exactly the sort of addition that I’ve been wanting from JP101. Y’all rock.

avatar Jeremy Kissell says:

I love the new video vocab. It’s visual and straight to business.

A quick concise little way that was perfect for me today.

I actually came across a word earlier today that I didn’t recognize, I knew it was a family related term, and I never bothered to look it up… it was the word for daughter.

Thse videos are great!!!

avatar Matt says:

Thanks for all the comments, everyone. I’m watching this page very carefully and am considering any suggestions you have. Let me address a few points;

We considered flash, but decided against it. With these videos, I see people using them on their iPod primarily, so we wanted to make it a format where you could download it. Sure, a flash file would be much smaller in size, but you would forfeit the ability to take it with you.

Our orginal plan was to make this something which could be used by Japanese people learning English as well as English speakers learning Japanese. Eventually, we decided against it, but the english word being said twice was a remenent of that idea. After it was mentioned, it seems very stupid to me to keep it in. We will keep the spoken english word in there, but only once.

This video was just a sample of things to come in order to get comments. Future videos will use their cooresponding episode’s vocabulary, so all difficulties.

As Peter said, we’re going to start pumping these out for each lesson, hopefully. Before that happens, please keep the comments coming. I want to know, most of all, if there’s anything we can do that could help you learn better — that’s the true goal.

avatar paramausi says:

great idea :)
i hope you keep them coming ^_^

anyway, do u plan on making longer videos as this one? (more than 10 words?) that would be even better :D :dogeza:

avatar hasan says:

this video is veryyyyyyyyyyyy great …

:nihon:

avatar Will says:

Personally I still prefer having flash movies - as I have an old nano which wont play video so rather than having to download the full movie and then watch it id prefer the flash. Ideally I think you should go with both !!!

avatar Courtney says:

Wow, I love these lessons!! They’re quick, to the point, and help you learn a lot! It was great to see the kanji, too! These are awesome and I’ll be checking back everyday for more!

avatar Devon says:

My computer is broken! Video is really great though. Of course Miki’s blog is excellent.

avatar Scott Curry says:

Alright, ya got me! I’m a premium member now! I couldn’t pass up this deal. I love how the premium feed works with iTunes, all the pdf’s are right there with the lesson. The Learning Center is awesome too. I like the Kanji Close-ups, I really wanna start getting in depth with kanji. Reading and writing it. I like how there are spaces where I can trace over the kanji before writing it completely by myself. I’m 27 now but my handwriting looks like a 5 year-olds. This will probably teach me to be more patient when writing in Japanese and also carry over into my English and Russian as well.

avatar Neta says:

Hi!
I LOVE this idea!!!
Is it free, or for basic or premium members?
Something I would suggest is perhaps writing out the romaji as well? I know it can be hard for beginners, as I was once one, and still kind of am. Or perhaps making a video that teaches both kanas. That would be extremely helpful to all of those confused Nihongo newbies out there! I hope you at least consider it!

Thanks a lot! I’ll DEFINITELY be using these vids!!!

:kokoro: :nihon: (I know that wasn’t the Japanese sentence order and is missing particles, but I think everyone gets the point  )

avatar Neta says:

Oh! One more thing, are you guys planning on eventually doing these for previous lessons? I know that would take a great deal of time, so I’m just wondering =)

avatar Barney says:

Thanks Jpod, the video vocab is a great idea! Thanks for keeping learning interesting for us!
I have a couple suggestions for the video vocab. They could be a little too difficult to implement - I don’t know much about the technichal side of things, but here goes:

Lengthen the video by a minute or two,
to have the kanji/vocab introduced via animated stroke order (such as a Canon elec. dictionary does in Kanjigen) for the whole word. (just the first time the word is shown).

Also have a quick review at the end of the vid with the words pronounced in japanese & presented randomly, minus the hiragana reading of the kanji and the written english translation.

I think these ideas could really add to our recognition and retention of the words.

Thanks for your innovation jpod, Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to all.

avatar Dave says:

The video vocab thing is a good idea, but I find the background music off-putting it would be better without it.

avatar 松尾 says:

a small correction as pointed out to me by my japanese wife -

一生懸命
いっしょうけんめい

whereas
一所懸命
いっしょけんめい

the video shows the second kanji with the first kanji’s reading which is not correct.

the format of the video is most excellent however!
thanks!

avatar Angela Bush says:

The video vocab is fantastic - especially for new learners like me - it’s particularly useful to re-inforce lesson notes and to try and understand different voices

I must admit that, at this stage, I have more difficulty understanding male speakers but I’m working on it.

Overall - it’s fab - keep the videos coming :dogeza:
Angela

avatar Tom says:

Wow!!!!! Thank you very much for these great videos. Please have somemore..
Thank you naomi - san, peter-san and technical people behind this ideas.

Thank you. Happy New Year…

avatar Phil says:

I don’t think I’ve ever understood a Miki’s blog, and this one was no different. It would be much nicer if you could go through what was said in the lesson, but as a lengthy stream of super difficult language spoken at break neck speeds it may as well be in martian for all the use it does me!

avatar tiger says:

JapanesePod101の皆さん、

今年一生懸命勉強したいです。

avatar Miki says:

Happy new year  :kokoro:

Thank you for all commrnts :dogeza:
I hope the new year will bring you good luck and happiness.
今年もよろしくおねがいします  :nihon:

avatar Ginny says:

A good idea,

BUT! some of us learners are hard of hearing! The music in the background makes close listening impossible.

Music is great, but in the right place!

avatar Saito says:

great this will really help my vocab

Theres one thing I would like to see as a newbie learner I would really like the japanese words to also show in rōmaji. That would - especially for new kana - make it a lot easier to learn (for me at least)

And maybe you can do something with brushstrokes for the kana like having them appear as they are written.

avatar Giacomo Stiletto says:

where did you get the music? Loved the video!
