OkayamaS-san,

I now remembered "-ta hou ga ii" because of today's lesson! But the point is: I did not remember it before this lesson when I was trying to make up a construction using "should"

Mayumi-san,

Thank you very much. Really nice explanation! 有り難う!

I think when a teacher says 「本を読みましょう」 to kids, it can be translated as "you should read a book." もっと本を読みましょう or 毎日本をよみましょう would be natural. Also, mothers may often say もっと本を読もうね to kids to mean that you should read more books.

Thank you all veru much!

I had seen the translation of a sentence engind in "shou" as "should" and since then it kept me wondering if that would the structure to use in these situations.

I didn't remember "~ta hou ga ii" at the time. But thank you so much for clearing that up.

Mou ichi do, azasu!

I've always found it interesting that Japanese have so many roundabout ways of saying things. In English we might say "you should read it" but in Japanese it is impossible to be so direct without giving an order. 「読んだ方がいい」＝ It would be better if you read it 「読まないと行けない」＝　If you don't read it, it won't do...

I think "hon wo yomimashou" is interpreted as "let's read a book."

For the sentence "you should read a book," I would guess it's "hon wo yomanai wa ikenai."

Mina-san, genki desu ka?

Is it possible to use the volitional to say something equivalent to "should" in Japanese? For example, could the phrase "hon wo yomimashou" be interpreted as "you should read a book"? Or it would just mean "let's read a book"?

Arigatou gozaimasu!
