Learn Japanese at JapanesePod101.com! Two offices buddies are talking about some of their bad habits. Even thought they don’t share habits, they share something much deeper: izonshō ni nariyasui (they’re easily addicted to things). We’ll look at 2 ways to use bakari, as well as a few colloquial variations. After listening, stop by JapanesePod101.com and be sure to leave us a post!

Mina-san,
These guys are 凝り性, addictive personalities.
How about you guys? What’s your weakness? Chocolate, shopping, JapanesePod101, biting your nails, etc….?
Sheesh, some twosome! What do we get next? The junkie and the kleptomaniac?!
Oh and…Natsuko san, now you HAVE to do a lesson on how your marathon goes! Ganbatte!
Finally a story about smokers and gamblers. I’ve been waiting for a lesson I can relate to. My favorite way to relax is plop myself down at the pachinko-ya. And as we all know, pachinko is basically a chain-smoking sport.
I live in The Netherlands and here u need to be 16 to buy sigarets and low prosentage alcohol. but for strong alcohol and gambaling you need to be 18.
I will save a lot of money becouse i do’nt smoke, drink, or gamble ![]()
my only adiction is watching J-dorama, anime and playing computer games

¥300? A pack of 10 decent brand cigarettes in England is pushing £3, so about $6 at the moment. I haven’t bought a pack for months though, and haven’t smoked one for weeks. I haven’t officially given up, but I think I’d have an easier time than most people seem to; maybe I’ll make it a New Year’s resolution.
Funny gambling should come up today, a book I ordered ‘The Mathematics of Poker’ arrived today
If you know what you’re doing it’s more of a game involving money than out and out gambling on stupid odds like a lot of betting shop stuff. It’s fun to play too, so you get some sort of value on your money when you lose.
i have too many addictions…
sound, music, technology, history, linguistics, japanesepod101, collecting 葵の御紋… i could go on and on… but i probably shouldn’t in public…
btw - a bit of a cultural note, in japan smoking is a ubiquitous torture i’m subjected to on a daily basis (no offense to any smokers out there). i never realized how good certain cities in the US had become about smoking until i came here. in japan, i literally see people smoke WHILE they are eating!
or when the light at the crosswalk goes red, they light up and suck down a whole cigarette. that’s the epitome of addiction, i think. ![]()
japanese people are usually so polite, but when it comes to cigarettes, it’s as if it’s a god given right.
a few years ago, i did some research on the subject and met a lawyer who works for Japan Tobacco. he told me that the japanese government owns at least 50% of Japan Tobacco (they used to own almost all of it in the past). this company is immensely influential and has been since the early Meiji period. ![]()
internationally it’s one of the richest companies in the world. within Japan and asia, it’s one of the most powerful and influential.
so as a result, smoking is acceptable in a many places i would have thought it not:
at the so-called “family restaurants” (diners), often the smoking section is much larger than the non-smoking section and non-smokers have to walk thru that section to get to a non-smoking seat. then they’ll have to pass thru it again to get to the bathroom. ![]()
or many restaurants don’t even have a non-smoking section.
things seem to be changing quickly, but………..
javizyさん、
i quit!! it’s not only possible, but once you really pull it off you’ll never go back. ![]()
頑張ってくださいませ!
This sounds like a pretty realistic conversation. I mean, you could have this anywhere in the world and there is someone saying the same thing.
I usually don’t smoke, but sometimes I bet on a baseball game. But I only make easy bets. The loser buys dinner or gets an embarrassing photograph taken for the internet.

Marky, wow thanks for the interesting addition in the comment! I’m so surprised that smoking in public places is so prevalent in Japan. It’s quite the opposite in Korea - I don’t smoke myself and have never been a smoker either but I have friends who smoke and it really looks like a headache to be a smoker in Korea. There’s just too few choices left when you want to go have lunch with someone who needs to smoke during the meal.
According to the Guardian (UK) newspaper: “(Pachinko) generates ¥30 trillion a year, which is more than the top 5 car manufacturers”
