I'm so surprised that smoking in public places is so prevalent in Japan. It's quite the opposite in Korea - I don't smoke myself and have never been a smoker either but I have friends who smoke and it really looks like a headache to be a smoker in Korea. There's just too few choices left when you want to go have lunch with someone who needs to smoke during the meal. Marky, wow thanks for the interesting addition in the comment! I mean, you could have this anywhere in the world and there is someone saying the same thing. I usually don't smoke, but sometimes I bet on a baseball game. But I only make easy bets. The loser buys dinner or gets an embarrassing photograph taken for the internet. Kitty-chan This sounds like a pretty realistic conversation. A pack of 10 decent brand cigarettes in England is pushing £3, so about $6 at the moment. I haven't bought a pack for months though, and haven't smoked one for weeks. I haven't officially given up, but I think I'd have an easier time than most people seem to; maybe I'll make it a New Year's resolution. Funny gambling should come up today, a book I ordered 'The Mathematics of Poker' arrived today  If you know what you're doing it's more of a game involving money than out and out gambling on stupid odds like a lot of betting shop stuff. It's fun to play too, so you get some sort of value on your money when you lose. ¥300? A pack of 10 decent brand cigarettes in England is pushing £3, so about $6 at the moment.
