Mina-san, We couldn’t resist including a little nod to ペリーのお願い by Tom Miyazaki. This was an hilarious comedy piece that was popular a few years ago. Perry arrives in Japan and tries to persuade the Tokugawa Bakufu to open the country up. My personal favorite line, 開国するといいよ~ん! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6A3YXFU84Q

This lesson made me do some thinking. When I first heard Commodore Perry, I was thinking Battle of Lake Erie, not international trade. (combination of history class flashbacks, the monument at Put-in-Bay (South Bass Island) and I live at the western end of Lake Erie.) After a search, I realized you were referencing his younger brother.
Thanks for the nice long lesson. Since yesterday was Turkey Day here, I didn’t get a chance to go through that lesson yesterday, so I did it before this one. I did make it about 3/4 though this one before my first shopping stop this morning. Also, thanks for posting the lesson early enough for those of us participating in Black Friday to get it before leaving home.

Is not the common expression: omedeto gozaimasu the more formal version of “medetai desu. Also, is not ohayo gozaimasu the more formal version of “hayai desu”. So the “archaic” form is used every day.
Also, is this formal use of adjectives truely archaic now? It has been some years since I was in Japan, but in very polite situations, this more polite form of the adjectives was quite often used. If so, I must also truely meet the definition of archaic.

The lesson was great ! And really challenging too, which is nice since I think intermediate lessons were getting easier. Can we hope for some more archaic japanese grammar ?

This lesson was certainly interesting! Intermediate Level is still too hard from me, but I can get a lot from it, anyway, on a number of levels. ふんどしはおもしろいですね。
It would be fun to see Lord Marky wearing that, hahaha!
I was able to see a few guys wearing that on my trip to Japan last month. My Japanese friends took me to Itabashi Kumin Matsuri, an annual festival for people in Itabashi Ward, Tokyo. Here’s a little picture, doesn’t show much, but . . . .

I really enjoyed the explanation on the sentence ending particles used in the samurai era.
Does anyone know a good book that is dedicated to teaching Japanese students the nuances of sentence ending particles - those used now as well as those from the past?
Thanks
Saturday at 7:01 am
Lol I can’t believe you’re playing Koda Kumi in the Edo era.
