During the party Higashi and Kim Yon discuss their birthdays. We’ll be going over how express dates (month/day) in Japanese and, of course, how to say “Happy Birthday!” After listening, stop by JapanesePod101.com and be sure to leave us a post!

Mina-san, finally Fabrizio returns!
Well, for one line at least!
I’m trying to imagine what kind of hijinks goes on at a Fabrizio party and it boggles the mind. What kind of present would you give him?

I have a question that has been plaguing me for some time. In trying to ‘read’ the Japanese language as it is written but I find it difficult to determine where one word ends and another begins. The characters just seem to me, to run into one long word. Can anyone provide some insight in this area?
TIA.

nateさん、i think all western learners have this same problem! so i hope everyone can shed some personal experience on it.
i can’t speak for other people, but i personally found that particles are a good place to start looking:
は、が、を、で、に are pretty strong indicators of not only the proceeding word’s grammatical function but they act like a “buffer” between words. (as you get more casual, you can’t rely on this so much… but in the Nihongo Dojo you can!)
also, when i started out… if i typed a sentence, i spaced my words like they do in some newbie books.
for example: 日本語を 勉強するのが 好きです。
until i felt comfortable, i typed all my emails and wrote my homework like this. eventually i got comfortable and stopped doing it. but one note of warning, that style is not normal for native japanese! so your friends won’t write that way and signs and books and documents aren’t written that way. but it’s not a bad way to start off.
and actually, if i’m not mistaken, naomi’s PDF’s are written in that style.
anyone else have some thoughts on this?
marky
Maxiewawa, you should do that in Japanese!
If you’re that good in Japanese, you’re twice as good as me!

Arigatou gozaimasu, Marky-san. I will take your suggestions and begin there.

Marky san the particles are very important
hiragana is also essential to identify the verb conjugations , thus
separating words

Well, I think the Review Tracks are a great innovation: just the kind of added value that makes the learning center worth it.
But why should Newbies and Beginners have ALL the fun?
Lower Intermediate and Intermediate review tracks would be great.
They could be slightly more involved than the beginner ones, letting us practice the constructions from the bunpo sections and so forth. PLEEEEEEASE?! With sugar on top?
Anyway, I would appreciate it a lot.
Oh, btw, the PDFs on Miki’s Blog are great too : without them, the Advanced lessons were way too hard for me. But with the PDFs and a bit of perseverance, Miki’s Blog has become a great resource for listening comprehension.
francisco様,
we’ve got you covered, don’t worry! ![]()
we’ve actually started making review tracks for Lower Intermediate and Intermediate! a few have already gone out, but after next week it’ll be standard for every level, except miki’s blog.
the format will be lesson vocab, lesson sample sentences, and sample sentences from the pdf. also from time to time we’ll try to throw you a few curve balls to keep you on your toes. oh… and sometimes i’ll be including male/female variants and politeness level variants.
also, glad to know you like the pdf’s with miki’s blog. that suggestion came from the forum! at the end of november every blog will have an accompanying pdf

Marky-san…
Oh COOL!
But which lesson’s review tracks are up already? Did you start with Intermediate lesson #1 and you’re working your way up? You should put up some liks…
these ones have it:

http://www.japanesepod101.com/2007/11/01/lower-intermediate-lesson-48-paella/
thursday & friday’s lessons will also have it! ![]()
actually tomorrow, i’m recording all the review for the reset of november and december and first week of january. 大変だー!
as for the old lessons, i’d like to eventually go back and add these, but with over 600 lessons at this point, that’s no small task.
in the meantime, it’s standard for all new lessons. i only apologize that more often than not, everyone has to put up with my broadcast-unfriendly voice instead of our more mellifluous hosts… 申し訳御座いません
