Learn Japanese at JapanesePod101.com! Halloween is here at last so we’ve put together another scary story by the legendary storyteller, Inagawa Junji. This story features a Nihon Ningyō (traditional Japanese Doll) which has some connection to Sayaka’s dead sister. The doll has a nasty habit of biting her boyfriends and scaring them away. You’ll never think of these traditional dolls the same again. After listening, stop by JapanesePod101.com and be sure to leave us a ghost… er, post!

Mina-san,
We’ve all seen traditional Japanese Dolls. We’ve all seen their ghostly white faces and little beady eyes. They stare at you no matter where you move in a room. They are ever vigilant. They are silent. And they are plotting against you.

Enjoy another Premium Kaidan!
And in the words of Liz21, “No romaji? Now that’s scarey!!”
Happy Halloween, mina-san!
怖い。。。。
Even we made this story but still scare us a lot.
Please listen to this horror story as looking at nihon ningyo pic above!
Happy Halloweeeeen!
Mina-san, could you live with one of these things in your home?
怖い!!!!

btw - there is a temporary problem with the line-by-line audio in the learning center. this story has 95 separate lines (a new jpod record!) so i think that’s causing a glitch. but we’re working on it! i apologize in advance for any inconvenience.
Holy crap! You guys scared the living $#!¥ out of me again!

I couldn’t even understand 90% of it and it still made my skin crawl.
Happy Halloween Everybody!
I cannot access the PDF Lesson note, but the Kanji close up is not a problem. May someone fix it please.
皆さん、
After listening to this story, and watching the pictures, please watch the anime movie パプリカ, especially the parade, which includes weird dolls.
I’m going to wait until tomorrow morning to listen to this one! If the O-bon stories were anything to go by, if I listened tonight I would probably have to leave all the lights on in my flat overnight.
Btw, I, too, am having problems downloading the lesson notes PDF. But I’m it will be fixed soon. Thanks!
I was expecting a genki, lighthearted Japanese lesson. When you said this was a “scary story” I didn’t think it would be like this. I’ll never doubt you again.
Very, VERY COOL!
Mina-san - Apologies for the technical glitches with the Line-By-Line Audio Transcript and the Lesson Notes PDF. Both issues have been corrected. If you are still having a difficult time playing all 95 lines, please try clearing your cache and click SHIFT-REFRESH when on the transcript page.
great treat for us , thank you

Dear Sindy, those dolls look like classic “gofun” dolls made by Kyugetsu, which is a very famous dollmaker in Japan. But these things are expensive! Sayako should have sold the doll and used the money to buy herself a pair of manolos.
Btw, the “gofun” refers to the subtle white finish on the faces, which is made from ground-up oyster shells.
Having said that, Sindy, there are always a few secondhand Kyugetsu dolls available somewhere on eBay, very cheaply. Do include “gofun” in your search to filter out the ones with padded silk faces. Here in Singapore, most people would be very nervous about bringing a previously-owned doll into their home without knowing its provenance thoroughly, it’s probably a superstitious/cultural thing!
wow, what i great lesson! it was genuinely scary too! makes me want to watch more japanese horror films (e.g. ringu, juon, etc).
i love the characters, especially Take and all his thoughts/musings. 面白い。
JapanesePod101 Team,
I just wanted to send you a note to let you know that I think the work you do is absolutely amazing. I listened to Halloween Kaidan during my drive to work this morning, and have listened to the other premium lessons that you offered, and wow! The quality of these stories just blows away anything I would have expected. I have to admit, I still feel like I’m a beginner and can’t understand everything in these podcasts, but I can’t wait for more of these premium episodes! You encourage me to keep at my studies. I even bought Miki’s A Day in the Life, knowing that I wasn’t going to understand most of what was being said, but because, I suppose, I want to encourage you to continue with this content.
Absolutely stellar.
I thank you,
Dan
Dan-san!
That’s great, good luck on learning Japanese and on Miki’s e-book you have all my support!
Auntie-san!

Dear Sindy, you’re most welcome. Hope you get a wonderful doll! For more information on these dolls, why not try visiting the company website — kyugetsu DOT co DOT jp.
All the best,
Auntie
Whoops, sorry, that was “DOT com” (not “DOT co DOT jp). Sorry.
I really liked the lesson, but there is a mistake in the vocabulary list (I think).
to glare at …means… にらむ not… みらむ right?
Please keep the scary themes coming! How about teaching us how to tell some jokes?
Thanks for your hard work Japanese Pod 101!!!
