Learn Japanese at JapanesePod101.com! Today is the end of Natsumi’s taxi ride to Yokohama. Will she still be late for Fabrizio’s party? In today’s lesson we’ll review telling time and take a look at how to express lengths of time in Japanese. Also, if you’ve been following this story arc, don’t forget to check out the combined audio track of Natsumi’s entire cab ride (it’ll be great practice!). After listening, stop by JapanesePod101.com and be sure to leave us a post!

Mina-san, if you started as a Newbie and still think Japanese is difficult, guess again. This cab ride lastest for 3 lesson, but if you listen to the combined story, you’ll be surprised at how much you can understand! Woo-hoo!

Numbers are something I’m still not comfortable with when it comes to listening; it still takes a bit of ‘processing time’ when I hear them. I should really watch the news more, since they churn out all sorts of dates and figures, but it’s a bit frustrating not understanding so much of it. It’d be cool if all the lessons were introduced in Japanese with the date and lesson number/title.

If you listen to the lessons from the start, you get a good example of how to adjust your politeness level as you become more familiar with the people; Naomi has been using more casual speech recently, and seems to be more at ease. Natsuko seems a lot more relaxed in the second half of the intermediate lessons too. I liked the two manga ones, it’s good to hear natural conversation between the two girls. Oh, and that American guy who pops up is sort of okay too :wink:

Thank you for the long conversation file! :dogeza: :dogeza: :dogeza:
It really helps me test my progress! :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

I hope we can see Fabrizio’s party! :sad: :sad: :sad:
It’s been 3 weeks and no Fabrizio! :kokoro: :kokoro: :kokoro:

Javizy-san, I have the same problem with numbers needing extra processing time. I also get hachi and roku mixed up all the time.

I just realized something about the minutes - the numbers with the shortened names get “ppun”. The numbers with the full names get “fun”. And as Naomi-sensei said, the ones ending in “n” get “pun”.

ichi => i -ppun (short)
ni => ni -fun (full)
san => san -pun (ends in “n”)
yon => yon -pun (ends in “n”)
go => go -fun (full)
roku => ro -ppun (short)
nana => nana -fun (full)
hachi => ha -ppun (short)
or
hachi => hachi -fun (full)
kyuu => kyuu -fun (full)
juu => ju -ppun (short)
