I’m heading to Japan tomorrow. I’ll be in Tokyo for two weeks, so I’ve been listening to jPod pretty much non-stop all week. As such, I have a couple thoughts: First, thank you guys so much for all you’ve done and continue to do. Second, I still enjoy the podcasts immensely, but I miss Takase-san.

I think many of you will remember our Yoshi, who was a voice actor on this website/podcast for about a year. His sense of humor and his interesting voice were amazing! Since leaving the podcast, he has formed the “Tokyo Circus”. He is a street performer and has done his act on the streets of Tokyo. I found out he was coming to the US, so I invited him to stay at our house near Chicago if he wanted to. He came here recently. It was so great to meet him! He’s just as funny in person! And, for those of you who know about “The Twist of Fate” iLove video, it was kind of a dream come true for me,

But don’t let this discourage you, アニタ. Despite numerous misogynist comments in this vein, even H. L. Mencken finally got married, and seems to have considered himself blessed. Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials.
This conversation was certainly not dull, and it managed to fit in great vocabulary and grammar points.

I was going to offer to put him up in my apartment also, but I’m moving to Japan in November. Unless he can get his shiny white (cute) butt to Tennessee in the next couple of weeks, I’ll have to see him in his country!!

It’s easy to understand your confusion, and this illustrates why Japanese is not written exclusively with phonetic scripts such as hiragana. In 「勇気がいる」 the 「いる」 is not the “iru” of animate objects existing (居る). Instead, it is the verb 「要る」 “to be needed”. Actually, the kanji are rarely used for these two verbs, because the context makes it instantly clear which is meant. If there were a chance that native speakers might find the meaning ambiguous, then the kanji would be used.

I forgot to mention one more point on how different these two verbs are. While both verbs are 「いる」 in their plain form, the verb of animate existance becames 「います」, and the verb “to be needed” becomes 「いります」 in its -masu form.

Just a bit of feedback on this, when doing the yukkuri replay of the dialogue, the guy on this lesson tends to speak to s-l-o-w-l-y as to be impossible to understand.

Also, one more thing which I’m noticing more and more now with Japanese Pod - the amount of new vocab in each lesson can be quite overwhelming. It used to be just a few new words each lesson, but now it can be around 10… Maybe others can memorize so much each day but it’s a little beyond me!
Also, how about giving the new vocab before the dialogue? With there being such a large number of new words, which at that point are meaningless, it can make the dialogue a bit pointless!

The guy reading the lines on the slow-down dialogue is reading them infuriatingly slow. There’s a difference between “slow down the dialogue” and “sound mentally impaired” and this guy falls into the latter category.
