Well, this is a treat! I have been using the line-by-line audio while using rikai-chan to “read” the kanji, then scrolling down to English occasionally. It’s really fun! Line-by-line helps me so much! Thanks again for all the fun!!

rigoさん、
don’t look behind you tomorrow!

lizさん、
yuki and i wanted to make this challenging and cool at the same time. looks like this was good for you!

we intentionally ruled out the romaji — and were expecting a backlash, but so far so good, right?
what do you guys think about this?
in the next few weeks, we’ll be debuting a super secret special series with peter and team for premium listeners. so everyone, please give us your feedback about premium lesson. from the old days, we’ve been a work in progress and, well, we’re still trying to grow with you guys!
一緒に頑張りましょう!

Another good job! I could picture Ushijima and Miki’s dialogue in a J-Horror; voice acting seems to be second nature for the jpod staff. Everybody survived this time though

Romaji is a waste of space, so I think you made the right choice. If the translation started on its own page and was only one column, it’d save some space/be easier to read though.

Javizyさん、
i feel the same way about romaji!!
i hate it.

and about miki and jun!
even our voice actors said, ‘they are natural.’
miki is really talented and we are really lucky to have her with us now!!
and jun is giving us a great amount of content!!!!
i’ll be sure to show them this post tomorrow!

 I wouldn’t know I haven’t listen, but I won’t try either. I know it will be very very scary. I’m such a chicken for this, but I really hate having nightmares. I will skip this time….. and next maybe too.

I think removing the romaji is a step in the right direction. Now can we start the campaign for furigana instead of a seperate column for kanji vs kana?

I figured I’ll link my name in the replies with my username in the forum from now on.

avatar
JockZon (JZ) says:

Yeah, Furigana!

avatar
Liz21 says:

Oooh, remove the romaji? Now, THAT’S scarey!!

But, seriously, I would love having furigana!! Please consider it.

avatar
Javizy says:

I’m not so sure about furigana. I always attempt to read the kanji the best I can, and use the kana for readings that I don’t know. With furigana, it’s hard not to read it when it’s right there, and I think it would end up becoming a crutch for a some people. It’s also quite messy, and inconvenient to the people who can actually read kanji.

The PDF’s are one of the only resources you’ll find with educated native level text accompanied with kana. They also give you the option to avoid using even the kana, and instead look up words with a kanji dictionary (like you would with a book or newspaper).

There are plenty of books and manga available with furigana, I don’t see why it’s necessary for the PDF’s. Except maybe newbie lessons, where people are expected to know next to no kanji, but if it started turning up in the other levels, I’d be pretty disappointed.

markystar says:

ahhh the furigana and romaji debate…

i’m gonna steer clear of this one for the time being,
but i will say that from a purely technological standpoint we can’t do furigana currently.

I guess it’s not so “super secret” anymore, hahahaha!!

Rikai-chan is like furigana, except it doesn’t clutter up things. I like it!

I’m very happy of these lessons. These are really taking my Japanese to the next level. I’ve really appreciated that you got rid of the romaji too, they were useless. I am a big fan of Furigana, if it were inserted reading would be very easy and moreover the PDFs will be shorter to print (Save Our Trees). Please make the new “super secret special series” available to basic subscribers as well. I’ve a basic subscription till February and I think that the “super secret special series” would help me a lot with the JLPT!
Thanks again!
Bye

I second the furigana request, it is strange because I still have the first pdfs and there were furigana in these.

I would also like the pdfs to be searchable and ‘copypastable’, meaning the text remain text and not image, and can be copied (very useful to search for kanji in a dictionary for example).

Very fine premium lessons!
Yes, you can skip the romaji at that level.
So we have to learn the different readings.
I use Kanjilab, very boring but very effective.

My first comment post. Most of the time I am content to read about what everyone else thinks. However, the subject of “furigana” needs my vote as well. I use romaji as a crutch, do not like just “kana” (It is harder to seperate the words) and would find kana and kanji with furigana the best solution for reading skill development. That said, Thanks for the great learning tool!. I enjoy all the podcasts at all levels.

Wow! You guys got me good on this one!

I decided to listen to this one in the car on the way home from work at night. Little did I know what was in store for me on this episode!

I thought something really was on the roof of my car!
At least the cops didn’t pull me over.
Good job again!
