hahahahaha, mark, i told peter about that after i heard this one. hahahaha
my research came up with this:
spit (noun) had a meaning ‘exactly replica’ which was current until the 1920’s. it may have been slang or dialectal.
the phrase ‘the spit & image’ was a way to say ‘an exact copy, a doppelganger.’
the phrase became corrupted by way of ‘the spit ‘n’ image.’ it then hypercorrected to ‘the spitting image.’
woo hoo! etymology is fun!!

By the way, Kitty, etymology accounts for the history of a word (or often part of a word). It can be quite interesting, many words are derived from other languages, especially Latin with English. You can learn a fair amount of culture from etymology.

Splitting image or spitting image? I’m U.K born and I always used spitting image. There used to be a political puppet satire show called Spitting Image, with such running jokes as the President’s Brain is Missing, Reagan’s brain travels to Gorbochov (spell?)
Splitting might be American? or polite form English?
Anyway that was when you were all babies.

When answering a negative question (ja nai desu ka) do you generally avoid a direct response (hai, iie) because it would cause confusion? I seem to remember that Japanese and English responses are different–Japanese responses would be more “literal” in their interpretation.
By the way, it looks like based on the demand for signed pictures, you might have a new product for your online store!

Nice photos! I’ve always got Natsuko and Sakura sensei mixed up though. I could recognise them by their voices but if I saw them in person (and they didn’t speak) I’m sure I’d do something silly.

Another thing, ‘janai desuka’ is completely from ‘janai ka’ isn’t it？ I’ve been watching Ranma 1/2 and whenever 九能 gets hit in the head, he is heard to remark ‘痛いじゃないか’, which is translated as ‘this really hurts you know’. So I get from this that ’じゃないか’ just stresses a point and doesn’t actually ask a question…

つまり、「じゃないですか」と「じゃないか」と「じゃない」はどう違いますか。
I’ve always been interested in etymology, but always get it confused with entomology, the study of bugs.

☆「痛いじゃないですか」itaijanaidesu ka. —It has “desu” in it, so it’s polite.
★「痛いじゃないか」itaijanai ka. —It’s informal. Used mainly by men.
☆「痛いじゃない」itaijanai —-It’s informal. Sounds a little feminine.
Even though they have かat the end, these are rhetorical questions.
And you have to say these with a falling intonation. This “janaidesu ka” carries a sense of accusation.
The sentence you can find in our dialogue「ジョニーデップさんじゃないですか(↑）」is a negative question and intonation should rise at か.
