Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! Today’s lesson takes place in a yūbinkyoku, post office, but it could take place anywhere. Today’s grammar is priceless in that you can use it in so many situations. We’ll be reviewing -tai n desu ga, which is the indirect way to say you want to do something and get someone to help you. We’ll also look at ni nasaru which is the polite way to say ni suru (to choose something). After listening, stop by JapanesePod101.com to leave us a post!

Mina-san, last night tragedy struck here at JPod World! SomeONE or someTHING broke into the office and STOLE today’s Newbie Lesson! We’ve called the police and sent Yuki and Akihiro out on a search and rescue mission.

In the meantime, we’re giving you tomorrow’s Beginner S2 lesson today. And if we find the stolen lesson, we’ll punish the culprit JPod style and deliver the goods straight to you tomorrow!

avatar bakaneko says:

Stolen a lesson?! ゆるせない!

avatar Liz21 says:

Stole a lesson?
うそ!!!

avatar maxiewawa says:

ぬすまれた? なにかに?明日のレッスンの話題について何か円があるかもしれない!ライバル会社にぬすまれたと思います。
Stolen? By someTHING? Maybe this has something to do with the subject for tomorrow’s lesson…
(En Ga Aru? Is that correct?)

Re: Japanese Surface Mail in Foreign Countries.
I’d be happy to call the consulate here in Shanghai, if someone would translate the following into super-polite 日本語。

In today’s Japanese lesson, we learnt 船便. Our teachers weren’t sure which word would be used if something was sent from a foreign country overland to another country. What would be the right word?

No, really, I’ll email them, or at the very least find someone who is able to help!

最後にもらった小包はCDでした。eBayで買いました。
Saigo Ni Moratta kozutsumi ha CD deshita.eBay de kaimashita.
The last package I received was a CD. I got it using eBay.

What was the last package you received? Substitute ‘CD’ for whatever you got, unless by some coincidence you also got a CD. I suspect a lot of people will be using the phrase ‘tomodachi ni moratta’ (It was given to me by a friend)

「どれくらいさがありますか?」What a useful phrase with 差in there! I wish I knew that one when I lived in Japan!

avatar kitty-chan says:

Who steals Japanese Pod Lessons?! Those rats! When you find them you should send them to me for punishment — Kitty-chan style!

avatar markystar says:

皆さん, thanks for your support and understanding. unfortunately, this isn’t the first time. we have an idea of who it may be, but our lawyers have advised us to refrain from naming names.

maxさん, i could be wrong, but i’m pretty sure in japanese the name doesn’t change. i’d venture to say that airmail leaves japan on a plane and then goes surface after that. i have no proof, but seems like that would be the case. either way, i’m willing to bet the japanese word doesn’t change.
this is interesting, so max or anyone: PROVE ME WRONG and i’ll send you an AUTOGRAPHED COPY of BOA’s next single.

as for your last challenge:
最近小包はもらってしまってないけど、彼女からいっぱいチュをもらった。おかげ様…
nobody sends me packages anymore. 可愛そうなサウンドガイだからさ~…

and lastly kitty-chanさん、
i thought hello kitty was cute and cuddly, but you sound ruthless!
i’ll be happy to send the culprit/culprits your way. especially if it’s who i think it was….

avatar Peter says:

Kitty-chan, 見てみたい  。 I’d like to see that!

デボンさん、yes, this is a useful one. Sometimes we’re in the lessons and I learn something that just makes me do a double take, as I can’t believe I didn’t come across it sooner! Case in point:
すいません。I have never used that! After I learned, I hear it all the time.

Max-san, 頼むよ!お願いします!

Liz-san, it is great to have you back on the board!

Bakaneko, nice expression!

This situation gives me a chance to use the grammatical construction ように
明日あるように!Asu aru you ni. So that it’s there tomorrow.
Used in this context, you’re expressing your desire for something to occur or happen.

avatar Peter says:

Marky! I was posting first! 許せない!

avatar markystar says:

peter, i haven’t heard from akihiro and yuki yet……
they could be in danger…

should i change into my j-supersuit and go find them?

avatar シンディー says:

JP101 Crew and Listeners!

注意を引く良い戦術!

Kitty-san!

Your Kitty-chan style is NOT enought, it doesn’t scare no one!!

If anyone hurts my Akihiro-san, Yuki-san and all my Japanese crew people then you would see MY
ULVER SPELL WAY!!

Who ever stole the lesson, don’t mess with me and the JP101 Crew and Listeners Power!!

You’ll see pure evil! S_R_C

avatar Liz21 says:

Maxiewawa-san,
Thanks for the examples to practice with!

avatar シンディー says:

ohhhhh it’s black magic you know, never believe it unsolved!
I love that 70’s song and Electric Light Orchestra song “Strange Magic” too. S_R_C

avatar Neil says:

Peter, you’re absolutely right about 船便! 3 months from Japan to England, if you’re lucky. Once it took almost a year :-(

It is very cheap though.

avatar Yuki says:

Peter, sir!!

We are almost there!! We’d almost find the stolen lesson!!!
Can I use my martial arts to beat up robbers?
FoooooooOOOO!!!!!!!!

avatar シンディー says:

Peter-san and JP101 crew

おめでとうございます!   S_R_C
