Sorry Peter, and Nate, but I must...:mrgreen::grin:

Tidal waves and tsunamis are different, and pretty much exactly the opposite from the descriptions in the podcast (Gomen nasai!).

Tidal waves are related to tides (who'd 'athunk?), i.e. the motion of large bodies of water as they are affected by regular and predictable things like gravitational pull from the moon and sun. They are usually characterized as the "long waves" you mentioned in and out of rivers and spillways.

Tsunami are caused by random or unpredictable events like underwater earthquakes (jishin) or crashing asteroids. Although often tiny, causing a rise in ocean water of but millimeters, they can also give rise to huge roving walls of water as mentioned.

There's a lot of disinformation about the terminology differences between tsunami and tidal waves, so I don't blame anyone for feeling confused.

Dan-san
と here is a quotation marker.
The original sentence would be
山田が正解する　と　は　思わなかった。
I've never expected Mr./Ms. Yamada got the right answer.

I hope this helps.

jenchanted-san
In 「場合（に）（は）」 ni or wa is often omitted. I'd say 場合 or 場合は are commonly. wa is there to give emphasis.
東京に来る場合（は）、電話をください。
However in subordinate or conditional clause,場合 or 場合に are used.場合は can not be used in this case.
東京に来る場合に必要なものは何ですか。

I hope this makes sense.

Nate -
Come a little north. You may not realize it (they don't usually make the news here) but in northern Ohio, we see a small earthquake every other month. (many fault lines exist under the Great Lakes.) They are so small, there is rarely any damage. If they stop for an extended period, then we are in trouble.

We don't get many earthquakes in the heartland of the US (I am in Texas), but there is a rather large rift zone that comes down through the midsection of the US and ends in Texas so it is possible, just not likely.

Nate-san
BTW - I loved the inro to this lesson. The electronic voice was very cool.
