Zoe-san, てる is a shortening of ている. You got it.

Glen-san, yes. This a way that some guys speak when they angry or confrontational.

Glen, I was also perplexed by the rolled 'r's. I have never heard this before and it sounded vrey strange to me too. Sorry I can't offer any incite, just agreement in confusion!!

I am still struggling with the grammar point to ...てる。Is it just a shortening of ...ている? Or is it something else?

This comes up in today's conversation when the boss asks: せいようはどうなってる？

I'd love some help with this one.

Howdy. Could someone comment on the "rolled r's" that the boss uses in this podcast. I've heard them a lot in yakuza movies, and it seems to be a masculine thing carrying a "tough" sound. This is the first podcast I've heard it in but it immediately caught my ear. Any info appreciated.

@ katie-san: 8時だョ!全員集合 is how it is written

For those interested in the ザ・ドリフターズ here is the wiki link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Drifters_%28comedian%29

I would really like to push for a Culture Class on Japanese comedy. Learning about certain groups or talents (past and present) and what they are famous for, etc...

To get into the psyche of the Japanese humor accurately, it is probably going too much just to scratch the surface, but at least some insights and possible references would be greatly appreciated.

The Benedict Arnold thing might have been in yesterdays lesson, rather than todays, as I've just run thru them back to back. Still better late than never.

Peterさん asked about Benedict Arnold and how he was thought of in England. Well, I vaguely remember the name from history classes, but that's about it. Generally speaking the Americas are no longer considered one of the colonies, so loyalist & traitor are just words  I think we see the US more like a much loved son that's struck out on his own, but picked up a few weird habits. :)

A friend brought my attention to a Wikipedia article on White Day.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Day

It mentiones the concept of "sanbai-gaeshi" (3倍返し) or "triple return". Basically, the gift the guy should return on White Day should be 3 times the value of the initial gift the girl gave to him on valentines Day. That is pretty greedy!

I can imagine the King's misery over that

Happy White Day!
