My roomates and I talked about this all the time. It's so funny because you're required to have a contract, but you don't legally have to pay. They come to your door and try and make you feel guilty, and I think mostly guilt people into paying. I was surprised by how many of my friends actually paid for it. 'have you got a sec?' 'is now a good time?' (used when asking if someone has a second to talk with you) ちょっとコンビニに行ってくるよ! 'i'll go to the convenience store (and come right back)' (implying it's a quick errand) does this help at all? and for the record, no one has ever come to my door asking for NHK dues. i guess i'm lucky! In Texas we get PBS and I get junk mailings to please support public TV, but I suppose that is too easy to just toss in the trash, so periodically the station will just broadcast hours of someone droning on and on to call in your donation while volunteers sit in the background at a bank of phones taking calls. I always wonder if they are really talking to people pledging money or if they are trying to look good so you get caught up in the mood and feel you just have to call in. Our public TV is good tho... after all, without them I would have never seen Sesame Street. Hey //digitaljo-san,

I'll go look a little and come back?? I'll answer the door a little??? What am I missing? hello minasan,

The NHK seems a bit more extreme. What if PBS knocked on your door to pay for the local PBS station? I have a question though: What if some answered the door to the NHK collector, but he or she did not have the money to pay. So would their services get cut? It broadcasts all over Japan, so how would they limit the people not paying? :???: You know what this lesson reminds me of, America’s Public Broadcast System (PBS) when they have the donation drives.
