Let's not even talk about what I pay for internet service. It's utterly and completely depressing that I pay more for internet than I do for a month of school lunches.

I reckon, the guards go round to the shop and find it's been broken into and all the size 11 shoes stolen. The police are called and an investigation commences. Soon afterwards, the police get an anonymous tip-off and recover all the left shoes from a warehouse down by the docks. Further investigation is impeded by the world turning into a giant christmas pudding (with plenty of custard).

Mina-san, konichiwa. I've been in contact with the JP101 staff and have agreed to offer some background/context info here in the comments sections of the podcasts (I'll try to keep in mind what level the lessons are target at).

So here's a fun add-on activity for beginner lesson #151.

First, you need to visit the website of the company mentioned in the podcast. Here's the URL to their home security division: http://www.secom.co.jp/service/hs/ . Even if you can't read kanji, you can try sounding out the company's name in katakana:

Next, try finding out what services the company offers by clicking the サービス link (top left square in the navigation block in the center of the page). On the services page, do you see the text under the heading "ホームセキュリティの提供サービス"? You should recognize the first word 「防犯」 from the podcast vocab.

Oh, and as for that title I mentioned, do you recognize the 「ホームセキュリティ」 part. 「提供」 is "teikyou" and generally means "offer," so 「提供サービス」 is be "services offered." Moving on...

Next, try scrolling down to the bottom of the page (if you couldn't find the link from the front page, the direct URL is http://www.secom.co.jp/service/hs/service.html) and watching the animation video on the bottom. It illustrates the steps that the security workers in the podcast would have followed when they heard the alarm go off.

If you'd like to try to read and translate the text beneath the animation, here are some vocab clues:

状況 【じょうきょう】 state of affairs

Well, that's good and all, but how much would a security system from Secom cost you? Go back to the first page and click on the link to the right of services, the one that says 「プラン・料金」. If you live in a 2LDK and rent the security alarm equipment, you could be protected for only 4,600 yen per month! Not too bad, euh? Well, considering what you pay for high-speed internet, that is....

And for more advanced Japanese readers listening in, here's a link to the ja.wikipedia article on surveillance cameras (監視カメラ): http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%9B%A3%E8%A6%96%E3%82%AB%E3%83%A1%E3%83%A9
