You guys have meant so much to me ever since I started listening - I’ve learned a lot about the Japanese language and culture, but I’ve also made new friends both here and in the Japanese class I was inspired to start going to. ありがとうございます!面白かったです! Also, the forum has given me a new morning ritual by telling me about J-doramas… ;)

JP101, お誕生日おめでとうございます!

Yes indeed you have grown a lot in the last year. Very very nice!

Although, I think I’ll have to pass on the idea of listening to the first podcasts again.

Chris says:

Glad to hear that the chain of podcasts continues to grow. Good luck to you Andre.

Good job on the video Phillip.

And Happy Birthday JapanesePod101.com

I remember hearing a few weeks ago that this site was inspired by Chinese Pod. Just curious how long they were around before this site was started. I tried glancing at their site, but couldn’t find that. Is this a trend of one podcast inspiring another new one every December?

If these podcasts continue to grow, I think it would be great if there were a links page (on this site and the others) cross-linking them.

You’re definitely doing such a great job, and I must admit that sometimes you are growing so fast that I’m not able to keep the pace. Great!!!

Nagoya is my city!! It’s where I lived as an AFS exchange student many years ago, but I was back there in 2004. Here are some places to see:

1) Tokugawa Art Museum
Incredible displays of samurai armor and great art works, such as scrolls from the Tale of Genji.

http://www.tokugawa-art-museum.jp/english/index.html

2) Nagoya Castle

3) The “Oasis”. Next to Nagoya TV Tower. Go up the elevator to see the amazing water thing (can’t describe it). Also, there is a wonderful tofu shop on the bottom level.

Have a great time!

No podcasts while you are all gone?

Mina-san: don’t miss the bargains offered for subscriptions!!

and congratulations! I haven’t been here a full year yet but every lesson is fantastic! But… always trying to catch up.

Peter-san-

If you’re going to Nagoya and you like eating とんかつ you HAVE to check out yabaton. They make the BEST みそかつ.

In Kanazawa you should check out the new art museum. Really interesting stuff there.

And if you’re going to Gifu you should really stop off in 高山市. It’s really a charming city (I’m biased though, I lived there for almost 2 years). It’s sometimes called “little Kyoto” because of all the old buildings. But what’s really interesting, is that they’re not castles and temples, but an 400-500 year old shopping district that’s still in use. Kind of unusual for Japan.

Toyama… eh.

Matsumoto is great.

Wow a whole year!
I started listening to you guys in January, but it seems like it was just the other day. I can still remember when i listened to your first podcast with just Natsuko-san and Peter-san. Then came Kazunori-san and Sakura-san. At the time i was not enrolled in any Japanese class at school and so you guys were my only link into the Japanese world and you do not know the joy each one of your lessons has brough me! The JapanesePod101.com Team will always have a special place in my heart!
Honto ni doumo arigatou gozaimasu!!!

avatar
Alain says:

I agree with Josh: Takayama is one of my favorites.
Morning market is fine, and it’s one of the rare places in Japan where electric wires are in some streets under the ground!
Last time I rented a car at the station and I visited Gokayama contry, it’s splendid in that season with frozen paddy fields. It’s an easy one-day tour from Takayama.
http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/734/
mms://stream.unesco.org/culture/nhk/Shirakawa-go_and_Gokayama.wmv

But, Liz-san, even if the Tokugawa museum has good exhibitions, I was disappointed because you can see the Genji roll only one week a year: I went especially in Nagoya only to see reproductions I can have in a book at home or on the internet. Imagine you’re going to Le Louvre and Mona LIsa is exposed one week a year!

John C. Briggs says:

Dear Peterさん and JPOD,
Well, what can I say that hasn’t already been said by so many people.
I have been studying on my own for a few years, so I am familiar with most of the Japanese study materials.
One of the more well funded producers of Japanese self-study materials is NHK. They produce both radio and TV materials that are broadcast around the world on satellites and over the airwaves. They have been producing such materials for at least the last 20 years (perhaps longer), starting with a great video series called “Let’s Learn Japanese”. This is a 52 part series of half-hour videos starring a foreign called “Yan.” They also have a couple of series that run on Radio Japan and is available on the web. Clearly, their budgets are quite large and perhaps paided for by the Japanese tax payer.
But the short comings of the “old” model of education are clear, particularly when compared to the JPOD model. Almost all of the NHK materials are nearly impossible to find. They have at least four great video series, but it does not do the student any good because they are not available anyway. They cannot be purchased. They cannot be watched on the web. NHK does have their radio series available on the web, but you can only listen to one lesson per week, and you must do this by streaming. The material cannot be downloaded. NHK is so stuck in the past model, that their efforts are pretty much wasted because their intended audience cannot get the materials. It is a great shame.
By contrast, JPOD is on the cutting edge. High quality materials produced that can be listened to anywhere, any time. The complimentary PDFs add to the experience. Given the (presumably) small budget of JPOD, it is amazing to see how they have surpassed the giants at NHK. Personally, I hope NHK learns from this model and makes their materials more accessable. But I am not holding my breathe.
I have purchased a 1 year Premium membership and I am looking forward to another great year. Of course, I will continue to review the existing materials.
Peterさん, I hope you and your wife are able to take a well deserved vacation. Please enjoy.
Thanks
ジョン

Just wanted to say JapanesePod 101 has meant a lot to me in this past year. I have learned much about Japan and have gained a great love for the culture, language, and people. It is an honor to be apart of something like JapanesePod 101 at the beginning stages and be able to grow along with it. I plan to post regularly this year and be more a part of the JapanesePod 101 community and hopefully make some great friends in the process. Thanks to all of you who make this great experience possible and thanks Peter for the 1 year anniversary gift! It was given to me by my wife as the first Christmas gift of the season.

Hey, just listened to the “Tanjoubi” podcast. Happy Birthday, Japanese Pod 101.com! In the two-or-so months that I’ve been regularly listening, I’ve been so… er, enraptured (?) and have learnt so much that I couldn’t resist taking advantage of your one-year subscription offer. Thank you very much.

Peter, as for your travel plans: I lived in Toyama for nearly four years, so I can give you a hint fora good place to eat. In Toyama, you should definitely go to “Chatori Khatori.” It’s a Nepalese curry shop in Nishi-cho (Toyama’s downtown area). To get there, just take the streetcar from JR Toyama Station and get off at the Nishi-cho stop. You’ll soon see the restaurant — it’s just one block up from the Apita supermarket.

If you go to Chatori Khatori, you should try the “Banana Chicken Curry.” It’s out of this world. After eating it, if you don’t think it’s the best curry you’ve ever had, I’ll eat the tag out of my Orix Buffaloes hat. Also, if you go, please tell the “tenin” there (Khatori-san and Masako-san) that Ryan from Canada said “hello, and Merry Christmas.”

Also, I don’t know how long you’re spending in Kanazawa, but if you have time, there’s an incredible gyoza restaurant near Kanazawa University (across from the Jusco shopping mall). I can’t remember the exact name of the place, but they make this special gyoza called “white gyoza” that’s… “shinjiraremasen.”

In Fukui, you might want to check out the Montreal Cafe. It’s a quaint coffee shop in an red, ersatz horse barn. It’s not a “can’t miss” spot by any means, but it’s good for the memories.

Anyway, as a former resident and forever championer of the Hokuriku area, I was thrilled to hear that you’re heading there over your holidays. I hope you enjoy it, and come to love it (and its restaurants!) as I did.

While I’m making this post for the first time, I should add that you guys really need to add a lot more intermediate content/advanced content also. I’ve taken up to the advanced classes at my university, and haven’t taken Japanese classes in over 2 years now, but I’m finally going to Japan this summer. The intermediate has gotten me back in the groove and has gotten my listening skills back up (I used to be able to comfortably think in Japanese and speak rather quickly - this is doing a good job of getting me back to that level). I’ve been doing this for the past 2.5 weeks now and am on lesson 20 or so. I feel that I’m very quickly going to hit the edge of lessons here, so I’ve slowed down. More content for us advanced listeners! (please ^_^)
