-Chatta

This is probably one of the most popular endings you’ll encounter. It means “irrevocably”, “can’t be undone”, “went and did without thinking”. It’s a relatively cute ending. Most of the time a person using this ending would have to be pretty cute, usually a girl. Guys can use this ending, but it doesn’t happen as often. You probably wouldn’t see Kenshin using it!

You have to do something to the verb before you can just add this ending. It varies, depending on what group the verb is in. For instance, with -U -TSU -RU verbs, you remove the ending from the verb (-u, -tsu, -ru) and add -chatta.

taberu (to eat)- tabechatta
omou (to think)- omochatta
katsu (to win) - kachatta

With -SU verbs, you change the -SU to SHI first.

korosu (to kill) - koroshichatta
iyasu (to heal) - iyashichatta
osu (to push) - oshichatta

With -MU -NU -BU verbs, you conjugate it into its -NDE form, and remove the last -DE. Also, you use -jatta instead of -chatta.

shinu (to die) - shinjatta
korobu (to fall) - koronjatta
ochikomu (to be depressed) - ochikonjatta

okaasan no ringo datta no ni, mo tabechatta!
mother (’s) apple was even though, already ate it (and it can’t be un-ate)
Even though it was mother’s apple, I went and ate it!

taisetsu na tomodachi wa shinjatta node, kanashinde iru.
important friend (subject) died because, am being sad.
Because an important friend is dead, (I’m) sad.

The ～てしまう form can be used for two reasons,
A) have done, finish~ing
B)
I will assume that ～てちゃう or ～てちゃった　can have the same two meanings unless I am corrected by Jason again.

Yes, 〜ちゃう (not 〜てちゃう) is just short for 〜てしまう, so it has exactly the same meaning. TaeKim’s explanation at that link you gave is much, much better. I had forgotten about the 〜ちまう variation he mentions, too.

This is more of a minor point, but be sure not to confuse 〜ちゃう with the standalone 関西弁 word ちゃう which is just the 関西弁 equivalent of 違う.

I am worried that on Nanaseさん is more than any of these guys can handle.

Don’t forget, that as well as the てしまう ->　ちゃう construnction, there is also the ては　-> ちゃ　construction.

I saw this in a 3kyuu past paper, and it pretty much confused the hell out of me.

I think the question was something like:
たべ＿＿だめだよ
and the correct answer was ちゃ.　ては was not an option.

There is a lot of slang and casual Japanese in the JLPT. For someone like me, who learns in a classroom and has never lived in Japan, this is one of the hardest parts of the exam.

Jpod101 has helped me immensely in this regard

Although the ては/ちゃ one doesn’t come up often, the ちゃった one comes up all the time. Usually you will hear 2-3 times in the listening section. In fact, I think it is used in the example question at the start of the test, which they recycle every year. A young girl says おなかがすいちゃって。。。 (”I’m hungry!” Or, “I have regrettably (unintentionally?) become hungry ).

It’s because there’s an implied 「何か食べたい」 or similar phrase there at the end.

And why why why why why would Junjiさん actually throw a MiniDV tape away? Dude, just tape over the previous footage. Duh!

I’ll be watching the video in a moment, but I want to thank Jasonさん and Johnさん for the comments regarding ちゃ and ちゃう. These (and other unfamiliar endings e.g. りゃ iirc) keep coming up in songs, and always give me a translation headache. Anyone know of any books that cover this sort of thing?

Here’s what I think: The JPOD team didn’t want to be one-upped by Neil’s blazing technology so they recreated the same effect and now they will use it for their story. Just my guess . . . . .

This site is amazing! I’m impressed not only with the level of aptitude you guys bring to your work but also with the remarkable community of users that check in here daily. I’m inspired to work so much harder on my Japanese! iLove is hilarious and well done, can’t wait for the next episode. Was Junji surprised when he entered Nanase’s apt because there were three other Nasase’s around? That wasn’t so clear as he appeared fine with this reality once the initial shock quickly wore off. Keep up the great work!
