Mina-san,

Today’s location is ジョージタウン・Jōjitaun - hello to all of our listeners in Georgetown, Guyana!

Yoroshiku onegai shimasu!

avatar Barbara says:

First?! This is fun…

avatar Barbara says:

Aaaaghh.. does anyone else have as much trouble with numbers as I do? Any hints to help learn them???
I have a book of children’s games for toddlers that I bought for my grandbabies and there is this song:

‘Ichi, ni, san,
Ni, sorenkara shi, sorenkara go,
San, ichi, ni, sorenkara shi,
Sorenkara ni, sorenkara shi, sorenkara go.’

You are supposed to put up the appropriate fingers as you sing. Yup, this is about my level.

avatar Belton says:

Good bonus track.
Will probably need less explanation in future.

Worrying how short my short term retentation is though.

avatar Alain says:

Bonus track is a very good idea !

avatar Peter says:

Barbara-san, おめでとう。 Numbers, numbers, numbers! Believe it or not, I still have trouble! I read a lot about the economy and the really big numbers still give me trouble. Add in the need for my mind to convert to US dollars…let’s just say I know where you’re coming from.

Another problem is a large majority of the learning material out there just brushes over this topic or offers very little in the way the numbers actually used in context. They give you the numbers in order, very nice and neatly! So when hear the numbers out of order it’s can be difficult to make the association. Also, they go over the counters or measure words, but rarely use them in context. Throughout this series we’re going to use numbers as often as possible to address these issue.

Belton-san, thanks for the feedback! Yes, definitely. In the future, after we establish a system, the explanation will become redundant, and we’ll phase it out.

avatar Peter says:

Alain-san, just missed you. Thanks for the feedback! We’re glad you liked it!

avatar Belton says:

numbers. they don’t stick with me either.

I noticed something interesting with foreign students using English, when counting backwards from 10 they sometimes hit a point where they start counting up again!

I have to think hard to count out of sequence in Japanese. I also find having learnt words in a particular order I have to go through that order to remember a word or a verb form. Not exactly fast!

avatar rdesiree says:

Very nice bonus! Thanks! Oh, also the “regular” lesson is nice. Numbers - you can’t do too much of them
Bonus tracks that make me speak is in any case a very good idea, numbers or whatever.

Some time ago, I practiced with a dice with 18 sides - you know, those strange ones they sell as toys. Works fine - for the numbers up to 18 I’m Ok. It’s all the others

BTW, where’s the recipe for the curry???

avatar Claudenir says:

Hello, people, I think I get unnoticed yesterday, but here is my complaint again
I know many of you out there use the 1024×768 screen resolution. But as my monitor doesn’t support it I have to put it in 800×600. So I can’t see the whole width at once…. Just a little question for the tech team: Why does the horizontal rolling bar stay just at the bottom of the page? You know, it’s a little of work to me to go down just to roll it to the side over and over …

Claudenir

avatar Drusy says:

Great lesson as always, and AWESOME bonus track format, I absolutely love it! domo arigato :D

avatar John C. Briggs says:

Claudenirさん、
I have checked this out and you are absolutely right. This is a pain. Something must be wrong with their frames on the website. The problem happens in both IE and Firefox.
I was looking for a work-around and didn’t have much success. Seems like there must be a way to use the mouse for horizontal scrolling.
One website did shows that holding down the SHIFT key and moving the mouse wheel on Internet Explorer 7 should give you horizontal scrolling. Later in the article, it said that you needed to hold down both SHIFT and CTRL keys and moving the mouse wheel did the scrolling. Not sure which is right.
However, I am worried that if you only have 800×600, perhaps you have a very old machine and not IE 7.

avatar Claudenir says:

Johnさん,

Thanks for giving me an answer. And to the worries too. But the only problem here is that I have a old monitor. My machine is a Sempron 2300+. But the problem is that generally in other sites when the width is larger than that the monitor can should, we can roll it to the side with a bar that is always present. But here this doesn’t happen.
To relieve a little the pain to scroll it down to the bottom, I select the text from the left to the right, so the screen rolls to the right. But this is a very annoying thing…..
BTW, my mouse doesn’t have wheel

Claudenir

avatar Barbara says:

Claudenir-san,
You did not go unnoticed yesterday, I also have that problem, but you seem to know more of why it is so. ( yes, I am a little computer illiterate.) I was very happy one day when suddenly Jpod put the page numbers at the top of each page as opposed to only on bottom and have been hoping the scroll bar would one day magically appear likewise on top of the pages. But you know how to voice the problem! Arrigato gozaimasu, Claudenir!
Oh, of course, arrigato gozaimasu JP tech guys also! You are doing a great job!

avatar Eran says:

Claudenir-san,

Sorry for missing your post yesterday! I realize that using our site with an 800×600 screen resolution is not be the best experience in the world. Only about 3% of our users use a screen resolution of 800×600 or lower (see breakdown below). This fact coupled with the many, many advantages to using a higher screen resolution was the reason we decided to to go with a design optimized for a minimum resolution of 1024×768.

Resolution | % of Users
1024×768 | 46.49%
1280×1024 | 18.57%
1280×800 | 10.70%
1440×900 | 3.75%
1680×1050 | 3.33%
800×600 | 3.08%
1152×864 | 2.34%
1280×854 | 1.97%
1400×1050 | 1.94%
1280×768 | 1.63%

The reason the horizontal scrollbar only appears at the bottom of the page has to do with XHTML and the way our page is laid out using DIV tags and CSS (we use a tableless/frameless design).

I will try to come up with a tweak that will show the horizontal scrollbar where ever you are (not just all the way at the bottom) but I can’t make any promises as to how soon or whether I will be able to do so.

While I truly feel your pain and apologize for the inconvenience, I hope you can understand why we opted to go with a design optimized for a minimum screen resolution of 1024 x 768.

Thanks and regards,

Eran

avatar Barbara says:

Eran-san,
For a guy raised by a pack of wild badgers, you are a pretty smart guy.
BTW, I enjoyed the bonus track, a sort of fun little pop quiz. I failed, but luckily I can take it again. (and again, and again…)

avatar Eran says:

Mina-san,

Here are some useful links for anyone who is currently using 800×600 screen resolution and would like to bump it up to 1024×768 (or higher) for optimal viewing of our site:

Mac OS X

Windows XP

For anyone not sure what their screen resolution is, here’s a cool website that will tell you:

As always, any questions… Just ask!

avatar Sophie says:

Hi mina-san,

The bonus track is excellent, anything that makes me speak is very good!

Eran-san, did you try adding a overflow:auto; statement in the body {} declaration of the stylesheet ? Or is there any reason you avoided it ?

avatar John C. Briggs says:

Claudinerさん、
Well you should put a “wheel mouse” on your Christmas wish list. If you don’t happen to celebrate Christmas… … perhaps there is some other gift giving occasion in your future.

avatar Eran says:

Sophie-san, excellent suggestion! In fact, the overflow property was one of the first things I tried, but unfortunately it didn’t do the trick!

avatar Sophie says:

Eran-san,

I’ve tried removing the overflow: auto; in the .MainContainer {} declaration and it solves the problem in Firefox… let me know if it works for you too.

avatar Liz21 says:

Mina-san,
Take a look at Sophie-san’s beautiful photos by clicking on her name, above. And, she is equally at home in French or English and she is studying Japanese through japanesepod101.com

avatar Liz21 says:

Japanesepod101.com Team:
The bonus track is great!! Thanks so much! I need all the practice in speaking that I can get.

avatar Eran says:

Sophie-san,

You rock… that did the trick! I went ahead and updated our stylesheet and the fix seems to work on both Firefox and IE. Once again, a member of our community rises to the occasion.

Claudenir-san,

Using an 800×600 screen resolution, you should now be able to scroll horizontally from any where on the page without having to go all the way to the bottom. I hope this makes your experience a little bit more enjoyable.

avatar John C. Briggs says:

Eranさん,
Thanks, that fixed it.
John

avatar Claudenir says:

Eran-san,

Doumo arigatou gozaimasu for the great help you offered. I’m really sorry to make a big deal out of this minor issue.
As I said yesterday, I stayed without internet for about three months, but I’m with JPod101 since the beginning
And I really agree with everyone when they say this site really rocks! It’s a pity that in my financial conditions, I can’t take the whole benefit of it. But even so, I’m very happy
Ah, and I really trust in the tech team to make any improvement worthing for. So, one more time I thank all of you.

Claudenir

I will certainly try to get to the Ginza Apple Store MacUsers group meeting next year if my plans to visit Japan come true :)
The only fear I have is entering an Apple Store might trigger unstoppable buying reactions in an old-time Mac user and Mac fan like me :)

Mina-san, thank you for all the great feedback! Looks like this is something we’ll be implementing.
