Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! Chigusa is once again a koukousei, High School student, having a quick little chat with the kouchou, or principal. The subject turns to future plans, and Chigusa spills what she has in mind. And speaking of thinking of doing something, this is exactly what today’s grammar point will help you express in Japanese by using the plain volitional form of a verb followed by to omotte iru. Stop by JapanesePod101.com and be sure to leave us a post!

Mina-san,

Today’s location is 金星・きんせい・Kinsei - hello to all of our listeners on Venus

Yoroshiku onegai shimasu!

avatar Liz21 says:

#1 After JapanesePod101.com Team:
Thanks for these “Season 2″ episodes. They are giving me much-needed review. The teaching on the podcasts is very thorough– great work.

avatar Nathan says:

Liz-san,

We’re very glad that you are enjoying them and finding them useful  Keep up the great work!

avatar Sølvi says:

Sorry if the answer to this is in one of the lessons, but I’m a bit behind. In which episode does Season 2 begin?

avatar bakaneko says:

金星人にまたインターネット・アクセスがあることを知らなかった。 すごいね。

avatar Liz21 says:

Yoshi-san,
When are you coming? There are many things here I can show you!

avatar Sølvi says:

今夜、ヨガをしようと思っている!

Yeah, I know it’s past midnight over here, but there’s still time… Btw, does anybody know whether it should be ヨガをする or ヨガする?

avatar Belton says:

All the examples I see in my EIJIRO dictionary use を with various verbs describing yoga.

ヨガの練習をする : do exercises in yoga
ヨガを習う : take up a lesson on yoga
ヨガをやる : do yoga, practice yoga
週に_回ヨガをする : do yoga __ times a week

I’m not sure if と思っている would be “thinking about” though.
思う is more to do with opinions.
Maybe 考えている [かんがえている] might be better.
then I’m not sure about how to use しょう in that case.
I think ヨガをする事を考えている (I’m thinking of doing yoga) would work but it doesn’t have the idea of ability / potential.
ヨガをできる事を考えている (I’m thinking of my ability to do yoga ?) maybe. As you say it’s after midnight.

avatar Liz says:

Belton-san,
You are amazing — so knowledgeable and helpful!

Yoshi-san,
I should mention that El Paso, Texas has some fascinating things to see.

avatar Belton says:

Liz-san

he might have to take Take-san with him.

avatar Sølvi says:

Thanks a lot, Beltonさん! That actually helped me reinforce some of the words I learned in my Japanese class today :)
Ah, and I’ve done yoga for an hour now, my sense of day and night and such is a bit weird these days… :P

avatar Daniel Beck says:

Take Take Take…blah blah blah…
Yoshi Yoshi Yoshi…blah blah blah…

Lizさん、

How many times must I remind you. You’re married.

Peterさん、

Nice translation dude. “California was awesome dude!”

So, as you can see:
The West Coast is defintiely better!

avatar Max says:

My girlfriend Aika has started teaching some Chinese students Japanese. She’s using some Japanesepod material, but translated into Chinese. If there are any Chinese speakers out there, this one’s for you!

Notice 決定 and 留学 are exactly the same!

Also, I didn’t realise that this was season 2. Is it?

avatar Liz says:

Daniel-san,
Re, “California was awesome, dude!” I was trying to find the Japanese word for “dude”, but . . . . .

avatar Daniel Beck says:

Lizさん、

Yeah, well, Peterさん wasn’t being literal in his translation. Spot on from a dynamic translation point of view.

avatar katie says:

Yoshi-san, you can’t like both california and new york, just like you can’t be both a cat and a dog person. You are either one or the other. California is definatly awesome, dude.

Chicago O’Hare airport is the best airport ever

avatar Peter says:

Liz-san, we’re almost at season 2. These are still the pilots. Nice that you noticed.

Solvi-san, we’re starting soon.

Belton-san, 毎度ありがとうございます。

Max-san, please keep us updated on how using our material works out! Our lawyers are very interested. Still hectic here, but I haven’t forgot about that email.

Daniel-san, actually, it was Yoshi’s translation! That guy has some pizazz! Sometimes too much  . BTW, Daniel what are you wearing to Ageha?

avatar Peter says:

Katie-san, must have just missed you. What you wrote is too funny! Thanks for the laugh.

avatar Paul says:

I would like to ask about the Season 2. Is it revison from the start of the JapanesePod101 lessons or from somwehere in between? I am still quite behind and would like to know if there is anyone also in this position.

avatar Yoshi says:

Liz-san,

I’ll come see you tonight in your dreams!

Daniel Beck-san,

I’ll also come see you after I see Liz-san and I’ll sing “California Dreamin’” in your dream! Scary!

avatar Bob1 says:

よしさん

いい答えでした。米国は西と東海岸だけじゃないですね。

By the way, I was recently at the 35-year reunion of my high school graduation class, and was given the Nomad Award Certificate for having lived in the most different cities. I listed 11, but realized later that I had left out Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where I also spent 6 months. But Peter-san, maybe you already have me beat. どうでしょうか?

avatar Belton says:

Like feeding gizmos, never post after midnight. And listen to the day’s podcast more carefully.

I’ll correct my earlier ヨガをできる事 to ヨガができる事
then I’ll say that Vvol と思 っている *is* I’m thinking of doing…

On using 考える、I’m now unsure. But I still think my sentences are valid. (it doesn’t help that I confuse volition and potential)
Hopefully it’s just different ways of expressing the same idea… and as Peter-san or Jason-san has yet to correct me…

avatar Sølvi says:

About gizmos - when I was a kid I had to turn off the TV when they boy fed the gizmo after midnight and there was this creepy music or something… :| Scary!

avatar Daniel Beck says:

Yoshiさん、

Yeah, it would be a nightmare if YOU came singing. And especially if it is a Beach Boys song.

Peterさん、

Ageha? Are you high? I’m too old for that kinda thing.

Oh, and btw, Katieさん’s comment is just simply true. Interesting that you find it funny.

Oh, one more thing. I’m still waiting for you to comment on my implementing your suggestion on my podcast. よろしく!

avatar Daniel Beck says:

Oops. Not the Beach Boys. I forget who sang that song.

avatar John C. Briggs says:

“California Dreaming” is by “The Mamas and the Papas”.

avatar Sindy says:

 Katie-san, Daniel-san, Yoshi-san, Liz-san and everyone that agrees that California state (before Mexico) is the best place to live Thank You mina-san! Your right a great place specially the weather! I like The Mamas and the Papas too specially “Monday” song its so good to me!

 but I need to mention my city state like it or not “New York City” is the best state in the U.S.A to live also just listen to Frank Sinatra song “New York, New York” and you’ll see why my friends the truth is there!

Finally I like Max-san comment now Chinese and Japanese people are getting along that is good to hear you should love your neightboor!

 Solvi-san so you practice Yoga ehhhh great now I know why you look so calm in the video and fresh too maybe I should start doing Yoga too and visit you in the future so you can show me how you do it if you don’t mind!
I’m also going to add the countries in my list that I’m going to visit in the future when I start my “Around The World Trip” S_R_C

avatar Sindy says:

Yoshi-san I heard in the audio that you definitive want to comeback to NYC and I know why ehhhh! then after that go visit Chicago Illinois (LIz-san)great keep it up my friend! S_R_C

avatar David says:

This may be of help to some students who are looking for a weekly translated 40 minute mp3 that they can practice on.

Jesus Lifehouse is an international church in Tokyo that records their bi-lingaual messages and posts them online within a few days of their Sunday services. Everyweek there are 2 different messages, sometimes they are English first and then Japanese and other messages are Japanese first.

Go to http://www.jesuslifehouse.com I think you can even podcast their messages - do an iTunes search.

I love the messages and they’ve help my Japanese already.

Dave

avatar Daniel Beck says:

よしさん、

avatar Yoshi says:

Sindy-san,

Yes!

avatar Daniel Beck says:

I am NYC?

NYC is the “first” best “state”? はっ?

よしさん、

気をつけた方がいい。

avatar John C. Briggs says:

Beckさん、
Let’s see. NYC is not the “first” at anything I can think of. It is certainly not historically first.

And, last time I checked, NYC is not a state. Hmmm.

Well, it might be the “best” at something, so I guess this is OK.

Well, one out of three ain’t bad.

If you look again, you’ll see I was asking questions (rhetorical).

And if you look above, you’ll see I was responding to another post, not coming up with my own thoughts on the matter.

And if you look even farther up, you’ll see i was arguing that California was the BEST.

avatar John C. Briggs says:

Beckさん、
Oh, I know what you were responding to. I had the same reaction when I saw it.
