It was probably the most exposure I had to the language when I was there, unfortunately. I said ”すみませんが。手袋を亡くしました。” Several people went out of their way to help me find it, but to no avail. Eventually, on my way out of the place, I found it on the ground near the sidewalk. To this day, I'm not sure if what I said was appropriate, but they seemed to understand me. I still scan the comments and answer if I feel like it, but writing school essays on movies steals all my creativity... Just one more week to go, though! Then it's just lots and lots of reading before the exams, and I don't have to be too creative to do that :) In my case, it’s school.
