Also we heard that using かい as 回 is the “popular” way to use かい。However, it’s not that 回 is better liked than 階. In this case the phrase “commonly-used” or “widely-used” would be better. Yet another point covered in my “Common Problems in Speaking” class for Japanese students of English.
