ネイトさん、 as always, thank you! Yes, we’re building the foundation to start switching politeness levels. One of the really important topics we are going to cover in the upcoming weeks. Also, foreigners are usually cut a lot of slack in this area, but these are the skills that really make one a better speaker of the language.

I thought it was interesting that なつこさん mentioned ひきこもり。 I’ve heard of the term before, but I’ve always wondered, how do they maintain themselves? If one is always in one’s room, how do they get the money to survive? does anyone know?

Liz says:

Naz-san,
I looked this up online. From Wikpedia:

“Middle class affluence in a post-industrial society such as Japan allows parents to support and feed an adult child indefinitely in the home.”

avatar
Naz says:

Indefinitely? いいな。。 I wonder if I’d be happy if I turn into one? :???: My parents would probably not let me indulge in it  Thanks Liz-san

Peter says:

Liz-san, as always thanks for the help!

There’s a manga (and a recent anime) named “NHKによこそ!” whose main character is a ひきこもり. Very hilarious stuff. Go check it out.

Indefinitely? いいな。。 I wonder if I’d be happy if I turn into one?

Mark says:

Hm… I understood the soapbox part of your comment Jasonさん - give me a couple years to figure out the rest of it.

avatar
Vicky says:

Mark-san, I agree with you. Yeah couple of years to understand Jason-san’s comments. Hope he doesn’t talk about me.

I’m still working on to catch up my missing lessons. Got lots of work to do….

Daniel Beck says:

Markさん & Our Vickyちゃん、

Jason was telling us what a pitiful thing it is for someone to shut off themselves from society. And, no, it is not a desireable situation to be ひきもり. I agree 100%.

I’m surprised that no one commented on Yoshiさん’s greeting Nathanさん during the middle of the lesson. What was up with that? I noticed also that Nathanさん didn’t edit it out.

avatar
Daniel Beck says:

ひきもりじゃなくてひきこもり。

Oh, btw, the “Hello Nathan” comment is around the 9:24 mark.

avatar
Vicky says:

It was HI NATHAN?

Hi Nathan~~~maybe that’s what Yoshi-san wants us to do. Again, hi Nathan!

avatar
Jason says:

Hope he doesn’t talk about me.

Work hard so you’ll know for sure.

ひきもりじゃなくてひきこもり。

Doh! I spelled it like that too.

avatar
Max says:

 Hi Nathan!

avatar
Liz21 says:

I heard that, too! Nathan left it in!
Hi, Nathan!!

avatar
Mark says:

I was wondering about that, but assumed I just misheard it. I thought “they couldn’t have left that in!”

Anyways, hi Nathan!

avatar
Nathan says:

Oops, did I leave that in? Don’t tell Peter-san

Hi everyone

avatar
Daniel Beck says:

Nathanさん、

I have it on good authority he already knows.

avatar
Sindy says:

ohhh before I forget I heard that error too is ok Nathan!

avatar
Nate says:

Howdy to all those in Bogota.

Great lesson Peter, Yoshi, and Natsuko. Natsuko-san, I love your laughter.
