Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com! We just finished covering the complex Japanese railway system, so of course the next step is the busses! Busses in Japan can be quite difficult to use properly, and they vary from bus to bus. Although the trains will get you to the general vicinity, knowing how to use the busses will make your trip much more enjoyable! You can spend your time seeing the sights rather than walking around looking for them. Tune in, and then stop by JapanesePod101.com and leave a post!

Last week we jumped on the chuu chuu train, but now it is time for the busses to shine! Hope everyone enjoyed their weekend, and look forward to another week of JapanesePod101 as much as we are.

Fun I never take a bus in NYC. I either walk, take a company car or subway; mostly subways becasue they are faster.

To lovely Peter and all the JPod101 Crew, and to this great Community…
…Hello everybody! And thank you all so much for the amazing job you are doing! I discovered your podcast some weeks ago… and now I’m deeply in love with it! Thank you for helping me in my dream of learning this fascinating language. I’m just on Beginner Lesson #34 now but I hope to catch up soon… I’m looking forward to my August vacations, I will have a lot of time to devote to you.
Have a great day!!

avatar Liz says:

Do people drive at all in Tokyo?

avatar Jason says:

…go ’round and ’round. ‘Round and ’round. ’round and…..

Er…sorry.

avatar Daniel Beck says:

Hi Lauraさん、

Yes, some people drive in Tokyo. However, it can be rather frustrating. The streets are narrow and there are a ton of cars. And, there are almost no straight streets (don’t make a wrong turn!!!). The signs are very poorly designed, and you often have to turn to stay on the same road! You really need to have ナビ (GPS) and not be in any hurry to get somewhere.

In most cases, it’s definitely better to take advantage of the fantastic public transportation system.

Hmm…still no Our Vickyちゃん。

avatar Mark says:

Lizさん and Charmianさん, I echo those sentiments. :D And welcome Charmianさん!

Danielさん - This is my contribution to the goal. :D Our Vickyちゃん will do the rest of the work. ;)

If you are in Kyoto, Buses are the best way to get around. The major routes are shown on a tourist bus map called the ‘BusNavi’, which is really essential. The buses that are confined to central Kyoto are fixed fare (220yen I think). You pay when you get off. There’s a little hopper by the driver to dump the coins in. There’s also a slot to change 500yen coins.

I believe the longer distance buses have the numbered ticket system, although the only one of those I’ve been on was in Hakone. I think there’s some sort of validation/deduction system for travel passes as well, but I don’t know how that works.

Now that I’m all caught up on my Beginner Lessons (70 of them in 4 days!)…I enjoyed this; I’m glad to see busses are still used with all the other options.

avatar katie says:

Thank you for the hello Sindy!

avatar charmian says:

Good afternoon-or-whatever-it-is to everybody!
Wow.. connecting to the site and finding your greetings.. it’s too wonderful, thank you so much!

Liz-san.. yes, with the community, too… reading the comment pages is quite addictive. But - I’m so sorry - I couldn’t read what you wrote in Japanese, … I have 3 Internet browsers on this pc but they all show just a silly “????” and I’m unable to set them up. Anyway, thank you!

Mark-san! Thank you for your welcome, too  … I’m sorry my English is not good enough to express my joy in finding such warm friends… but you’ll surely understand how I feel.

Sindy-san. Hello, and thank you! Yes, maybe what you say is right… in everyday life, too, there are people who ignore me or don’t treat me nice… but I don’t care. I try not to espect anything special from people, so I can feel a lot happy when - as in this case - someone is kind to me.

Rob-san! Wow! 70 lessons in 4 days? Great! I’ll do my best to emulate you..!

Mata ne!

avatar Mark says:

Sindyさん,

Oh my… I think I might have ignored you by mistake. Sorry about that - Yoroshiku onegai shimasu! And welcome (even though I know you’ve been here a while)!

I guess only 15 comments today. And no Our Vickyちゃん :( Doko desu ka? ;)

avatar Daniel Beck says:

I think Our Vickyちゃん left us for Mixi.

Mina-san, thank you for all the comments! Sorry I’ve been away from the board, but things have been quite hectic over here. With that said, they are slowly returning to normal, so I should be back on the board. Just wanted to stop in and welcome Charmian-san.
