Peter: And the reason we are so good here is today, we are going to wrap up the verb

YOSHI: One margarita pizza. That's all.
店員 (ten’in) : お飲み物はいかがですか。(O-nomimono wa ikaga desu ka.)
STAFF: Would you like something to drink?
よし (Yoshi) : お水でいいです。二つお願いします。(O-mizu de ii desu. Futatsu onegai shimasu.)
YOSHI: Water is fine. Two please.

STAFF: Yes, understood.

TAKASE: Excuse me, is it possible to add anchovies as a topping?

STAFF: Yes, it is possible.
高瀬 (Takase) : なすも追加できますか。(Nasu mo tsuika dekimasu ka.)
TAKASE: Can you also add eggplant?
店員 (ten’in) : はい、大丈夫ですよ。(Hai, daijōbu desu yo.)
STAFF: Yes, no problem.
高瀬 (Takase) : あと、キノコとピーマンとパイナップルとチョコレートもお願いします。(Ato, kinoko to pīman to painappuru to chokorēto mo onegai shimasu.)
TAKASE: And mushrooms, green peppers, pineapples, and chocolates please.

よし (Yoshi) : 本気ですか。(Honki desu ka.)
YOSHI: Are you serious?
よし (Yoshi) : それは本当においしいですか。(Sore wa hontō ni oishii desu ka.)
YOSHI: Is that really good?
高瀬 (Takase) : はい、おいしいです。(Hai, oishii desu.)
TAKASE: It’s great.
よし (Yoshi) : 全部食べることができますか。(Zenbu taberu koto ga dekimasu ka.)
YOSHI: Can you eat it all?
高瀬 (Takase) : もちろん。よしさんは?(Mochiron. Yoshi-san wa?)
TAKASE: Of course. How about you?
よし (Yoshi) : 絶対できません。私には無理です。すみません。(Zettai dekimasen. Watashi ni wa muri desu. Sumimasen.)
YOSHI: I definitely can't. It is impossible for me. Excuse me.
店員 (ten’in) : はい。(Hai.)
STAFF: Yes.
よし (Yoshi) : マルガリータピザもう一つお願いします。(Marugarīta piza mō hitotsu onegai shimasu.)
YOSHI: One more margarita pizza, please.
高瀬 (Takase) : あ、よかったです。(A, yokatta desu.)
TAKASE: Ah, good.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter: Takase-san, can you really eat that pizza?
Takase: Yes, of course.
Peter: I thought you were just acting.
Takase: You don’t know how much I eat.
Peter: Yoshi-san, we are not going out with her.
Yoshi: I am scared.
Takase: Please, Yoshi.
Peter: What about, Peter?
Takase: I want to go with Yoshi.
Yoshi: I have to eat Margherita pizza.
Takase: お願いします。(Onegai shimasu.)
Yoshi: はい。いきましょう。ピーターさん。ごめんなさい。(Hai, ikimashō. Pītā-san, gomen nasai.)
Takase: さようなら。(Sayōnara.)
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: All right. On to the vocab, here we go. Yoshi-san, who is our special guest today?
Yoshi: ナツコさん、こんにちは。(Natsuko-san, kon’nichiwa.)
Natsuko: こんにちは。よろしくお願いします。(Kon’nichiwa. Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.)
Peter: よろしくお願いします。(Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.) All right, long conversation in there. Now today’s vocab is almost like a pizza shop. I mean…
Natsuko: Right.
Peter: Most of the words in here have to do with this but there are few other things. So what we are going to do is get right in. Again in this dialogue, we brought together a lot of stuff we’ve been doing over the past weeks and especially a lot of stuff from survival phrases. In survival phrases, we are always focusing on restaurants. So today, there is a lot of information in there. Now we are going to go over a couple of things again because some people may have missed them in the survival phrases. Okay Natsuko-san, first word. お願いします。(Onegai shimasu.)
Natsuko: 最初のキーワードは、注文 (Saisho no kīwādo wa, chūmon)
Peter: Order.
Natsuko: (slow)ちゅうもん (chūmon) (natural speed)注文 (chūmon)
Peter: Now Natsuko, what do we have in the dialogue?
Natsuko: 注文お願いします。(Chūmon onegai shimasu.)
Peter: Now this is the customer asking the person working at the store, I would like to order please.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: Now what’s the other way around. Sometimes you are sitting at the table, you are waiting a while and the waitress or waiter will come over and ask you. In that case, it’s going to change a bit and what are they going to ask you.
Natsuko: ご注文は?(Go-chūmon wa?)
Peter: Exactly. They add the prefix
Natsuko: ご (go)
Peter: To make it very polite.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: And then they use the magical は (wa). Now what may come after the magical は(wa)?
Natsuko: ご注文はお決まりですか。(Go-chūmon wa o-kimari desu ka.)
Peter: Okay, again this is very, very polite Japanese. So we just want to give you a little introduction and it’s a bit beyond the scope of today’s lesson but in the future, we are going to be getting into this and actually inside the PDF, we will have more about this extremely polite Japanese but this is something that you will hear from the waitress or the store side asking if you are ready to order. And if you are ready, you can say
Natsuko: はい、お願いします。(Hai, onegai shimasu.)
Peter: And if not, how can we ask for a little bit more time?
Natsuko: もう少し後でお願いします。(Mō sukoshi ato de onegai shimasu.)
Peter: After a little bit, please. So just a little more time, please. Now there are other ways to say this, again more complex ways but right now, for this level, this should suffice. It should be perfect for what you want to get across. All right, so we got the ordering down. What’s next?
Yoshi: 次のキーワードは、以上です。(Tsugi no kīwādo wa, ijō desu.)
Peter: The literal translation is above, but in this context in the restaurant, it means that’s all for your order. That’s it, I am done.
Natsuko: Yes.
Yoshi: (slow)いじょうです (ijō desu) (natural speed)以上です (ijō desu)
Peter: Now again, another one we introduced in survival phrases and we are just bringing it back here because in case some people missed it, now when you are done ordering and you want to let the waitress know or the person taking your order knows that you are finished ordering, we will use this word. ナツコさん、お願いします。(Natsuko-san, onegai shimasu.)
Natsuko: 以上です。(Ijō desu.)
Peter: And then they will know that you are done ordering. All right, what’s next?
Natsuko: 次のキーワードは、マルガリータピザ (Tsugi no kīwādo wa, marugarīta piza)
Peter: Pizza Margherita.

Peter: Now how do we make this into a verb?
Yoshi: 追加する (tsuika suru)
Peter: Yes, add する (suru). Now Natsuko-san, can you give us an example?
Natsuko: 新しいデータを追加します。(Atarashii dēta o tsuika shimasu.)
Peter: To add on new data. Now this word is used for certain situations. Adding something on to your order, adding something on to your report is 追加 (tsuika). All right, now we are going to get in to some vegetables. How do we say vegetables, Yoshi-san?
Yoshi: 野菜 (yasai)
Peter: Break it down.
Yoshi: (slow)やさい (yasai) (natural speed)野菜 (yasai)
Peter: All right. What do we have first?
Yoshi: ナス (nasu)
Peter: Eggplants.
Yoshi: (slow)なす (nasu) (natural speed)ナス (nasu)
Peter: Yoshi-san, you’ve been to the US. What do they call American eggplants?
Yoshi: 米ナス (beinasu)
Peter: Now the 米ナス (beinasu), the American eggplant is very big.
Natsuko: Yes.
Peter: American….
Natsuko: Almost huge.
Peter: It is huge. Well, that is compared to Japanese eggplant. How big are Japanese eggplants?
Natsuko: Usually Japanese eggplants are smaller, much smaller.
Peter: Yes. So that’s why there is this differentiation, but yes Japanese eggplants are quite good, really good.
Natsuko: I love them.
Peter: All right, next.

Peter: Mushrooms.

Peter: 松茸 (matsutake) mushrooms. All right, so one thing I’d like to point out. Now I said しいたけ (shiitake) mushroom and マツタケ (matsutake) mushrooms but actually in Japanese, the word for mushroom is
Natsuko: 茸 (take)
Peter: So the words actually come out to be
Natsuko: しい (shii) mushroom
Peter: And
Natsuko: 松 (matsu) mushroom.
Peter: Yes, but in English, they are known as しいたけ (shiitake) mushrooms and maybe I don’t know if too many people know about the other one まつたけ (matsutake) mushrooms, but we will have more on that in the PDF. All right, next.

Peter: Peppers, green peppers, correct?
Natsuko: Yes.
