Well.. Hiragana or Katakana. Not Kanji at the beginning.
I would recommend that you start with learning Hiragana first. Japanese kids star with Hiragana too.
However it's also true that some Engish-speaking people start studying from Katakana since English speaking people are familiar with Katakana. (The pronounciation of True English word and Japanese-adopted English word are so different though)

You can learn and practice kanji in our learning center.

Jonas-san,
Thank you for your answer about the use of "san". You said using "san" among very, very good friends would be inappropriate and would create a sense of distance.

When I listen to JPOD podcasts, I'm a little confused. Peter-san has co-workers, Yoshi-san, Take-san, Natsuko-san, but, as with us Americans, he wants to leap into instant friendship. That's the way we are:shock: Could you explain the relationship between Peter-san and his jpod colleagues and why should he say "san" to them? Thanks.

Sakuraさん！お帰りなさい！　 So, they finally let you out of jail for swimming with the sharks!

And boy, you had Peterさん in his place today. Good job! Maybe you've been taking lessons from Takaseさん。

Oh, and kudos to JP101 for giving in to the honorific campaign. I'd like to thank Jason for helping make this happen. Hmm……what should we campaign for next.
