Here I sit with headache, runny nose and aching joints and no matter how much I listen still approximately 56 Beginners lessons behind the pace in my understanding of japanese. I thought I felt sorry for myself but having listened to today’s lesson poor old Shakespear beats me all hands down!

According to a support document I found on Apple’s web site, Appleworks does not support unicode, the widely used system for handling two byte characters (comes with OS X). Back in the old Macintosh operating system prior to OS X, Apple sold a “Japanese Language Kit” for $139 that included Japanese fonts and allowed the use of 2-byte characters. If you are working in OS X, it would be cheaper (and a better investment) to purchase iWorks, or just use TextEdit that comes with OS X for free.

I’m just curious how does the Japanese IME work under MacOS? In Windows the default behaviour is you type a word in rouma-ji, it pops up in hiragana, you can either press enter to keep the word as is and move on or you can press space and it pops up a list of alternatives w/kanji and katakana.

It’s the same thing for Mac. The IME is called ことえり.

But I’ve had much, much better luck with the Mac one than the Windows one. The kanji prediction is much better and I think it offers a much wider range of non-standard kanji. I found the Windows one would often break words where it shouldn’t. Like to use an extreme example, if I wanted to say ピザが好きだ, the Windows one might break it up as ピザガス機だ。It’s not that bad, but you get the idea. I’ve never had this problem on my Mac. But Japan is a HUGE market for them, so I’m sure they’ve taken a lot of time to get it right. BTW, with a Mac, you can change the entire OS (and all of the built-in apps) to Japanese with the click of a button and a logout. Try that with Windows!

It was actually quite some time ago, but this word was covered previously. You’re hearing 相変わらず（あいかわらず） - aikawarazu, or “as usual”. So Peter-san is saying, “as always, I feel like a million bucks!”

Is your second question about ものすごい? If so, you can just think of ものすごい as something like sugoi squared Sugoi - to a great extent; monosugoi - to an extremely great extent.
