皆さん、today’s location is Pari ・パリ, hello to all our listeners in Paris and throughout France.
The polls are offically open! Will it be bachelor #1 or bachelor #2? Please include your vote in your post. Yoroshiku onegai shimasu! 宜しくお願いします!
Today, JapanesePod101.com’s Norwegian (Swiss) Army Knife, Jonas, worked his magic on the volume of today’s lesson, and it should sound much louder and clearer! Please let us know how this lesson sounds.

Finally, apologies regarding the double publish, but we were so excited about today’s lesson.

avatar Peter says:

More voting, but this time it’s an easy choice!
I vote for bachelor #1! He is everything and then some!
Take-san, you rock! And for all of you talent scouts out there, it took just over 10 hours of isolation recording in the studio to convince Take-san that a lifetime contract just might be the way to go. In the end, we got him.

avatar Nathan says:

Yay Take-san!!

I’ll be back after classes with my vote

avatar Sophie says:

Hello from ブレスト
That’s 500km away from Paris, not that far really, thanks for today’s location. :)

I’m catching up with the lessons while the japanese lessons at uni are stopped by the strikes we have here (how exotic, strikes…)

avatar Cindy C シンデイ- says:

I vote #2 ….. # 1 doesn’t sound respectful of Natsuko’s personal likes and dislikes, or perhaps she was trying to let him down gently and he didnt’t get the hint. Anyway it didn’t sound like too much chemistry between the two of them. Hopefully # 2 is a better match.

avatar Nathan says:

Sophie-san,

I hope your Uni situation is worked out soon! And beautiful photographs!! I think I’m going to use one of your desktops… I just have to decide which one

Cindy-san,

Uh oh, doesn’t sound good

avatar hongalisa says:

皆さん、久しぶりです。 2番に投票します!Good luck Natsuko!

avatar Nicole says:

Hmm…let’s give #2 a shot!

avatar Greg says:

I want to vote for Kaze1973. Natsuko and he got along very well.

avatar 寂しい マンゴ says:

Hey How about #3 where is he?why not give him a chance ?

avatar Michael D. Cassidy says:

Poor Natsuke! with all those men in Japan getting stuck with these two!

Anyway after saying シェ-クスピs about a dozen times I finally got the joke!

I wnet and checked the Dating game podcast to see if I missed there!! I felt better seeing I hadn’t. wooooooooooooooooooo

I’m slow but not that slow!

avatar Jonas says:

マンゴさん, who knows? Maybe he ran away in shame for not being picked? Or maybe he is waiting on some mountain for Natsuko-san and Yuuta-san to climb? Only time will tell!

Cassidy-san, I don’t think #2 is that bad! She could do worse(probably… like #1  ).

My vote is cast for #2 by the way :)

Jonas

avatar CP (Kurisuteosu Piiru) says:

#1 is clearly too egotistical to be any fun for Natsuko. Time to try #2.

Gee, what are the odds #2 will be problematic as well, bringing in #3? Tune in next time on Natsuko no Deitingu Geimu!

avatar Orlina says:

Hellooooooo JP101 ^^

I’ll vote for Mister #2.

Really, I can’t bear #1…-_-’

avatar Clienad says:

hahaha thats was hysterical. たけさん man that voice was pure class!

avatar Michael D. Cassidy says:

Kanji question: benn learning the kanji 誰 [dare].
However I do not find it in my essential kanji; is it not really used??

avatar Liz says:

The dating game follow up podcast was so much fun! I loved how Natsuko hung up on #1!! He tried to be a little nicer the second time, kedo he is too egotistical.

I vote for #2. He asked, “Hima desuka”. I think he is more thoughtful and sensitive to Natsuko’s feelings.

What will happenn next? I LOVE THIS PODCAST!! Thanks so much for doing it!

avatar Tayirbiz says:

Another superb lesson!

Number 1…He s acting a little weird,still kind tho.But you heard the girl.She doesnt like kabuki.So, number 2.

avatar Lily says:

Ahhhh, let’s go with bachelor #2. #1 is too egocentric… he’s not going to take care Natsuko because he only loves himself. I don’t think Natsuko will be happy with this dude.

I hope #2 will be a lot better cuz I’ve voted for him since the beginning…. Wait, I just got an idea. How about Natsuko still go meet that Shakespeare guy at the Kubuki theatre @ 8pm tonight just to give him another chance (perhaps he’s just bad in asking people out on the phone? ) and then meet #2 tomorrow night? Nothing wrong with dating both of them first.

avatar Vicky says:

Natsuko-san, I’m telling you, there isn’t many choice. Don’t waste you time with those guys. Why don’t you hang out with us? We are going to play bowling after work yeah!!!

avatar aak says:

#2 wa ii deshyou…

avatar Vicky says:

Any new kanji for today?

avatar RobGillon says:

Michael Cassidy-san - I see 誰 all the time, and it’s odd that it’s not in your dictionary, because it really should be…

I haven’t listened to the podcast yet, and for some reason, my Japanesepod101’s always take forever to download compared with my other podcasts, are the files a lot bigger or something?

avatar Daniel says:

Hmm…I think I better vote for #2. #1 would be かわいそう for Nats.

Peter, yet another podast without “very very nice”. Very very nice. You’re on a roll. Now, I almost miss it. Well, almost.

Oh, I don’t mean to pick on you, but I heard ぜいこうちょう again instead of ぜっこうちょう。がんばれ!

So, when will Takaseさん be back with the “Nagasaki-ben minute”?

Daniel

avatar Lily says:

I forgot to vote for Kaze1973. He and Natsuko have chemistry.

avatar Nate says:

I think Natsuko-san should go with #2. My two cents. Maybe you can meet by Hachiko.

ネイト

avatar RobGillon says:

Natsuko seems to be screaming out for number 2… number 1 obviously kinda scares her, not to mention that he’s trying to force her to go out with him, even though she doesn’t want to… I suggest that number 2 has to come and help her out, and then take her on a romantic getaway…

Alternatively, number 2 could try to come and help her, whereas she can actually take care of herself, and ends up bluntly rejecting both of them, and we find out she has a secret lover in her house already…

Or have I been watching too much dorama?

avatar jay says:

oh yeah number 2 baby!
I knew that lousy actor would be too self-obsessed! but maybe natsuko can tame his heart and bring him down to earth!

and like I said I’m sure number 2 has a secret fortune :) )))))

Vicky-san, haha that is so nice of you!! I’ll be there!

avatar jay says:

ps. please send the writers some chocolates or something.. GENIUS.

avatar jay says:

ps2. take, kaze, your voices are suberb! Being able to pass for you guys on the phone is my goal!

avatar jay says:

ps3. In order to hear more take-san, Natsuko will go out with #1 to the kabuki, but she will tell #2 about it. #2 will go to the theatre and pretend to be a kabuki actor, and ask natsuko out while they are watching! #1 will think he is a terrible actor, but natsuko will think it is suupaa suwiito!

avatar Nathan says:

Wow, what a turn-out!! Thank you everyone for looking after Natsuko-san  I’m going to have to stick with my original vote for #2

Michael-san, I agree with Rob-san - you should come across 誰 pretty often.

Jay-san, I’ll see you and Vicky-san at the bowling alley

avatar Liz says:

I want to know: what does ぜっこうちょうmean?:???: I keep hearing Peter say that when asked, “Genki desu ka”. Maybe I missed that in an earlier episode?

どうも

By the way, I forgot to say: the sound on this episode was really good! And, also, I didn’t really know that Takase さん played both parts!! Great acting, Takase!

avatar Daniel says:

Liz,

「絶好」ぜっこう is literally “splendid” or “golden”. 調「ちょう」is condition. So, 絶好調 like “I’m great”, “Never better”.

ぜいこうちょう, however…:???:

Daniel

avatar Shinichi says:

#2 because if you don’t like kabuki, no sense pushing it. Sorry #1 my vote is for #2

-msf

avatar Jonas says:

The reason you didn’t find 誰 is probably because it is not a 常用漢字(jouyou kanji). But it is in quite common use, so thats the reason we chose to include it.

Jonas

avatar Michael D. Cassidy says:

BUT you’ll all forgetting number 3, who is at Natsuko San’s door with flowers and candy and asking to an expensive Italian dinner and Sonny Rollins concert.

So I vote for number 3.

avatar Vicky says:

In a hour, ready to go bowling!!! yeah!!!
Jay-san and Nathan-san, who else???

Jonas, no new kanji for today?
BTW, I thought you are female some reason.

avatar Michael D. Cassidy says:

Sorry for leaving out ‘her’ after asking.
My typing is at best bad.

BUT Peter, what do you mean by ‘older people’?

Michael, who is 61 in June.

avatar Nathan says:

Liz-san,

In addition to what Daniel-san said, it actually tends to be a bit stronger. 絶好 tends to mean extremely good, even best or perfect, so 絶好調 is closer to “on top of the world”, “on cloud nine”, or “feeling like a million bucks”. And only Peter-san could keep that up for so long

Michael-san,

You’re just a young lad  Lots of my family are June bugs… I’m July

avatar Michael D. Cassidy says:

And for all my fellow geeks and SF readers: Stanlislaw Lem died today.

avatar Vicky says:

I have to ask…who is or was….Stanlistlaw Lem???
Whoever is/was, sorry to hear that.

avatar Vicky says:

Michael-san, SF readers mean for Science Fiction reders? Or readers from San Francisco? Nathan-san and I are having an argument here.

I guess it’s American thing?
Heading to hit some strikes!

Mata Ne~~~

avatar Daniel says:

Nathanさん、

Thanks for adding to the explanation of 絶好調。 Those additional phrases are good examples.

However, (and I’m not sure where you’re from, it might be different), but I didn’t know those phrases were stronger than “never better.” :???:

Plus, I would never say “on top of the world”. Not that there’s anything wrong with it, but automatically, the Carpenters start playing in my head. And, living in Japan, I’ve come to despise the Carpenters and the Beatles.

Daniel

avatar Nathan says:

Daniel-san,

Haha, I guess I just filtered out “never better”. Now that I think about it, I don’t think I would ever say “on top of the world” either… I don’t think I know the Carpenters song, though  Then again, I doubt I would ever say “on cloud nine” or “I feel like a million bucks” either

avatar Liz says:

Thanks for explaining that phrase, Daniel and Nathan!!

avatar Bob says:

Great script! Twists and turns just like an episode of 24!

OK, I think it will be great to see Natsuko opt for our たくましい unemployed mountain climber. I’m keen to see how charmed she’ll be when it comes time to pay for a meal. Or alternatively, in what convenient spot the car breaks down when he takes her for a drive. Mark my word, we’ll be seeing more of our actor, no matter how full of himself he is.

avatar jay says:

Well I’m off bowling with Vicky and Nathan.

avatar Nathan says:

Jayさん、がんばりましょう!

avatar Takase says:

Natsuko-san,
Go and see Shakesp-Takahashi! He sounds stupid but he could be really good looking

Shakespeare Takahashi-san,
Make sure to take some Kinoko-no-yama with you.

Takase

avatar Peter says:

Takase, that is why you rock!

avatar Daniel says:

Yeah yeah! Takaseさん! You rock!

Teach us Nagasaki-ben!

Daniel

avatar Andreas says:

Let’s give #3 a chance in the next episode. After a wild date of Karaoke and clubbing in Shibuya they end up in on of these snack bars …

avatar jay says:

I just figured out how #1 won the dating game.. he’s the host!

discuss.

avatar Hanspeter Höhn says:

My version of the storyboard is:

Natsuko makes appointments with both: same time, same place carriing a red rose for recongition. She invites Takase to watch this meeting secertly together  . After that Natsko and Takase go to have a drink or two und we can hear their comments about the two guys. In the bar they meet a gai-jin who tells a strange story about swimming with shraks  and Takase and Natsuko ….

Well about that there schould be a new inquiry.

Best greetings from Stuttgart, South-Germany, where we are looking forward to the first spring-weekend

Hanspeter

avatar Stan says:

Why don’t you do a video podcast of the dating game? Maybe on your next anniversary. It would be fun to see (the actors)

avatar Peter says:

Hanspeter-san, you start Monday! Great name BTW!

Andreas-san, have you been peeking at the script??

Jay-san,

Stan-san, next up is video!

avatar Andreas says:

Spring has also finally arrived in New York. I even spotted some Sakura trees blooming on park avenue today. It’s spring, no wonder that Natsuko is going to be in love. How romantic.

avatar Jason says:

Go and see Shakesp-Takahashi! He sounds stupid but he could be really good looking

avatar Jason says:

A little more on では/じゃありません and では/じゃないです. This also applies to ありません vs ないです when used with adjectives. According to my ex-Japanese teacher, ないです is considerably more straight forward declaration of negativity. And in Japanese indrectness is considered more polite/humble. In general, the more indirect, the more polite. The more direct, the less polite (note that’s *less* polite, not necessarily rude). That’s why textbooks usually try to get you into the habit of using ありません.

BTW, じゃ is simply a contraction of では.

avatar Matt says:

Vote for 二学士 !! Natzuko, we are being as ニース as possible. Drop シェイクスピア and bring in 二学士.

avatar Todd Eng says:

Konnichiwa, I am new to this site but I love it already! I vote for bachelor #2. I am sure that Shakespeare is a tanoshii hito, but #2 sounds like a better match.

Todd

avatar Brenda says:

I agree with the general opinion that #1 is too insensitive for Natsuko-san. Even if he’s good looking, he would be really boring. So she should give bachelor #2 a try. At least he hasn’t said enough to look like a loser yet! By the way, great acting by everyone!

avatar says:

夏子:

go for #2 山崎さん

#1 is too self-centered….

avatar René Malenfant says:

誰 isn’t a 常用漢字 (Jouyou Kanji), meaning that the Japanese don’t learn it in school, so some jouyou-only dictionaries don’t contain it. But it’s quite important, and you need to know it.

avatar John says:

Is there another meaning for Jodan. I’ve heard this before but not in this context. Holla back!
Thanks

avatar Nathan says:

John-san,

What was the context you heard it in? Joudan can also mean “upper tier (row, step, grade, etc.)”, but it is different kanji - 上段. It is also used this way in Aikido terminology to describe stances, weapon positions, etc. Is this what you were thinking of?

avatar John says:

Thanks Nathan for the clarification. Domou! Now I know that you have to learn kanji for some words to find out the meaning. The extent of my japanese is basically whatever I hear at the Dojo. Thanks again.

avatar Sterling says:

I SAY BACHELOR #2!!! HES THE ONLY CALM ONE AND NOT AS FRIGHTENINGLY HAPPY LIKE TAKAHASHI.

avatar Ashutosh says:

 Hajimemashite!
kanji risuto to isshou ni bunpou o oshiete kuremasen ka.
dozo yoroshikuonegai shimasu
arigatoo gozaimasu.
